January 30, 2015 8:00 AM

Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) Modules 1-3 Training:  Module 1: The Challenge of Learning to Read Module 2: The Speech Sounds of English: Phonetics, Phonology, and Phoneme Awareness Module 3: Spellography for Teachers: How English Spelling Works Description: LETRS is a professional development program that provides teachers with an understanding of: how students learn to read and writethe reasons why some students fail to learn to read, spell or writethe instructional strategies best supported by research Beyond the routines and lesson plans of their adopted reading programs, it's important that educators understand the language structures they're teaching, how students learn to read and write, and the reasons that some children fail to learn. This information and the best instructional strategies are embodied in 12, stand-alone sequential modules. Each component of reading instruction - phonemic awareness, phonics and word study, oral language, vocabulary, reading fluency, comprehension, assessment, and writing - is addressed. Through LETRS, teachers and reading coaches will gain a deeper understanding of language structure and how to help students who struggle with reading. Developed by Louisa Moats This is a 4 day training and you will need to commit to attend all 4 days from 8am-4pm. The Oklahoma State Department of Education is paying for a NATIONAL LETRS trainer to provide the training. You will need to purchase the Modules 1-3 books from Voyager Sopris Learning for this training. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU HAVE THE BOOKS FOR THE TRAINING. They are sold in a set. Here is the link to purchase the books: http://store.cambiumlearning.com/letrs-second-edition/# By participating in this professional development, you will be asked to take a pre and post test so  OSDE literacy team may  track the growth in teacher knowledge gained from the training.  Link to map of Rose State College Campus http://www.rose.edu/Websites/rose2010/images/AboutRose/2D_map/3D_map/Rose_Campus_Map_3D_13_sm.pdf
