In the summer months, two-hour tours of one of the world's busiest international waterways, the Detroit River, leave twice a day from docks in two locations: The Upper Detroit River Tour departs from Detroit's downtown Rivard Plaza. The Lower Detroit River Tour departs from Bishop Park in Wyandotte. The ships Diamond Jack and Diamond Queen have sailed the Great Lakes for many years and are Coast Guard approved. The Detroit tour passes by modern downtown Detroit and along the Canadian shore passing under the famous Ambassador Bridge.
The Jackson Park is a lovely tourist attraction that boasts of blooming tulips, fountains and much more. Apart from that, it is popular amongst sports enthusiasts as it features facilities like cricket field, football arena, basketball court and much more.
Centrally located on the bustling Woodward Avenue, Campus Martius Park is part of Detroit's efforts to reconstruct the downtown cityscape. Filled with botanical gardens and expansive lawns, this park is a welcome change from the high-rise buildings in the area, and draws hundreds of visitors in search of some sun and relaxation. The surrounding area has also grown to reflect the new spirit of downtown, with restaurants and cafes catering to families and business people alike. The park also houses monuments and artwork celebrating the history of the city, and features multiple stages for music concerts and performances. If you find yourself in Detroit during the winter months, be sure to bring your skates and head to Campus Martius' outdoor rink.
The Detroit Tigers, charter members of Major League Baseball's American League, abandoned the historic Tiger Stadium at the close of the 1999 season. Their new home is now in the downtown Theater District. Named after the bank, whose funds made its creation possible, Comerica Park has something of a circus-like atmosphere with enormous sculptures of tigers, bats and balls, as well as a carousel and ferris wheel. Apart from major baseball championships, this arena also plays host to numerous concerts.
Few cities have anything this splendid: an island park of nearly 1000 acres (404.68 hectares). Accessible by a vehicle bridge only ten minutes' drive from downtown, Belle Isle has been a favorite place of refuge and recreation for 150 years and more. It's a great spot to watch the magnificent ore freighters gliding down the river. Around the island, there is a swimming beach, a conservatory, formal gardens, an old lighthouse, the Dossin Great Lakes Museum, lagoons, picnic areas and much more. The Scott Fountain with its grotesque gargoyles provides a great evening light show. A drive around the island any time of year is a nice break during a busy day.
