Before getting incorporated as a city in 1935, Waycross was known as Old Nine, Pendleton and Tebeauville. Nestled in the center of Southeast Georgia, it is near the Okefenokee Swamp, a National Natural Landmark. It was founded by Dr. Daniel Lott, Dr. Benjamin Williams, Captain Cuyler Hilliard and Mr. William Bailey. The railroad played a vital role in the birth of this town and still is a crucial part. It is the birthplace of the famous Bubba Burgers. It has one of the largest computerized yards in the nation and is probably the biggest of its kind on the East Coast. Visit the Waycross Visitor Center and the Waycross Ware County Chamber of Commerce housed in an early 20th Century train depot. Some other interesting sites are the Okefenokee Heritage Center, Southern Forest World Museum, Laura S. Walker State Park and Obediah's Okefenok. Downtown Waycross is one of the major attractions as it has many good examples of Spanish Mission architecture and is dotted with distinct shops as well as dining establishments.
