Those in the know as far as jazz is concerned need no introduction to the music of Count Basie. Starting in the mid-1930s, the now deceased bandleader became one of the most popular jazz personalities of all-time. Respectfully referred to simply as "The Count," Basie's big band music would help usher in the swing music era of the 1940s. Leading between 16-18 musicians, his music is now immortalized in the jazz canon and yielded several undisputed classics that are now regarded as standards of the genre. Basie died in 1984, but the Count Basie Orchestra has continued on, recording and touring under the direction of several different bandleaders who have attempted to carry on his spirit and legacy.

Based in Brooklyn, New Kingston is a four-piece reggae outfit comprised of three Jamaican brothers, Tahir, Courtney and Tahir, as well as their father Courtney Panton Sr., who is affectionately known as Faddah P. Taking the smooth finishes of R&B, jazz and hip-hop into their style, the group released its first In the Streets, in 2010. With each new release, including 2012's Kingston University, New Kingston has managed to expand a surprisingly diverse following by remaining true to the reggae traditions of its home country while also moving with the urban flow of its adopted hometown of New York City.

The nostalgically influenced style of music called chillwave first rose Toro y Moi to prominence in 2009 with notable artists like Neon Indian, Washed Out and Memory Tapes. The guise of the South Carolina-born Chazwick Bundick, Toro y Moi creates a hazy style of 1980s synth-infused pop and 1970s funk that has build a substantial fan base for Bundick.
