Paddle through Turkey Run and Shades State Parks and under 4 Historic Covered Bridges. Stop along the many sandbars and hunt for rocks, fossils and Indian Beads. Paddle down the stream the Piankeshaw Indians called Pun-go-se-co-ne or "Water of many Sugar Trees." Their trips range from one hour floats to overnight adventures.
The Merom Conference Center was once the home of Union Christian College. After the college ceased to operate in 1924, the conference center started to operate here from 1935. It is now owned by the Indiana-Kentucky Conference of the United Church of Christ. This beautiful historic facility has a lot to offer. Apart from being available as a rental space, the church also hosts summer camps for children. A number of church events like youth group retreats, confirmation class retreats and outdoor education are conducted here.

Starting in Charleston and ending in Mattoon at 10th Street, this charming 12 mile trail is perfect for running, walking, biking, and horseback riding. The path mostly runs along an old railroad with scenic views of farmlands, ponds, woods, and creeks. There is 2 miles of paved road and 10 miles of unpaved pathway, but this trail is easy enough that even beginners can enjoy it.

Opened in 1956, Coles County Speedway is one of the oldest dirt tracks in the Mid-West. The 1/8th mile oval is the site of weekly races. Visit to see Micro Sprint cars zoom by or sign up yourself and race against fellow drivers in go-cart. This challenging track is fun for both spectators and drivers.
