Located by the sea, the Caswell Beach is a small village nestled in the Oak Island. The Oak Island Lighthouse is a principal feature of the town.
North Carolina’s oldest standing lighthouse, Old Baldy stands proudly at 110 feet (33 meters) guiding ships past the dangerous shoals at the mouth of the Cape Fear River since the 18th Century to 1935. Today, the lighthouse provides possibly the best views of the Bald Head Island. Admission to Smith Island Museum (USD5 for adults and USD2 for children) allows you to climb the 108 steps of this historic lighthouse for a spectacular view of the island. The Smith Island Museum and the lighthouse are open Tuesdays to Saturdays from 10:00a to 4:00p, and Sundays 11:00a to 4:00p.
Listed on the State Historic Sites, Fort Fisher played a pivotal role during the American Civil War. This stunning structure fortified the trading routes of Wilmington from attacks and supplied the Confederate armies with essential goods. After being designated as a landmark, Fort Fisher was transformed into a historic site that houses a museum where war exhibits, weapons, warrior gears, clothing and other artifacts are on display. Guided tours are a regular feature wherein visitors get to survey the fort's areas which were reconstructed after the war. Call ahead or check website for details.
Fort Fisher lies between the Atlantic Ocean on the east and the Cape Fear River on the west. Here the largest naval bombardment and land-sea battle took place during the Civil War. Hiking, swimming, and fishing are just some of the many activities that visitors will enjoy.
Situated on a 22-acre beachfront site, this 84,000 square foot facility contains numerous features including a half-acre freshwater conservatory, a two-story saltwater habitat, many interactive exhibits, a 150-seat auditorium, pondside observation decks, garden boardwalks, and nature trails. Three classrooms, a gift shop, and a concession stand are also on site.
