The Seven Angels Theatre in Waterbury was founded in 1988, during a major writers' strike in Los Angeles. This "way off-Broadway" theater has produced some unique musicals and plays, such as Nunsense. The Curtis Memorial Library is located in the center of Meriden across from the city hall. It was the main public library of the city of Meriden, Connecticut. The library was designed by architect Richard Williams in the Classical Revival style. The century-old marble Greek Revival Curtis Memorial building now houses the Augusta Curtis Cultural Center.
The Timexpo Museum is located at Waterbury, Connecticut. The museum is dedicated to the history of Timex Group and has exhibits going back to the founding of Waterbury Clock Company in 1854 C.E. Originally a vaudeville/movie house, it changed with the times over its 70 years of operations, presenting silent films, to Big Band sounds of the Tommy Dorsey Band, to contemporary rock concerts. It was closed in 1987. The Palace Theater has been renovated and reopened after several years. Seymour St. John Chapel is located in the campus of Choate Rosemary Hall and was built in 1924. This Georgian Revival structure was designed by Ralph Adams Cram and was formerly known as St. Andrew's Chapel. Besides being a sanctuary it is used for photo shoots and concerts.
The Paul Mellon Arts Center at Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford is not just a performing arts center for the Choate students, but it is also a masterpiece of modern architecture designed by I.M. Pei. The facility is named for Paul Mellon, son of Andrew Mellon (former Secretary of the Treasury), who attended Choate during the 1920s. The Main Stage, which seats 800, hosts a variety of shows put on by students and by touring artists, including the big spring musical, with past shows like Grand Hotel, Little Shop of Horrors, Chicago and Les Misérables. Throughout the year, there are children's theater productions too, often based on classic children's books. There is also an Experimental Theater (often called "The Black Box") where improv, theater practices and small cabaret shows are put on. On the other side of the arts center is the Art Gallery where student works are displayed and you can find students studying and lounging on the couches.
