»Drowning Pool

April 01, 2015 7:00 PM

Drowning Pool became a household name on the metal circuit in a matter of months in 2001, thanks to a well-received series of Ozzfest performances and the huge success of "Bodies," the band's debut single. The nu metal band formed in Dallas in 1996, and with constant touring began gathering a local following of heavy music fans. After "Bodies"--and its now oft-repeated chorus of "let the bodies hit the floor"--spread all over alternative rock radio, the band seemed poised to dethrone some of the genre's more prominent heavy-hitters. Unfortunately, however, lead singer Dave Williams died of heart disease just a year later and Drowning Pool was forced to evaluate its options. Ultimately, the band soldiered on, running through a couple of new lead singers before settling into a solidified new lineup. The group released its eponymous fourth album in 2010 and continues to tour regularly.

»Natalie Cole

April 11, 2015 8:30 PM

Natalie Cole is a singer/songwriter from Los Angeles who rose to fame as an R&B artist during the 1970s. Daughter of jazz legend Nat King Cole and Duke Ellington Orchestra singer Maria Cole, she was exposed to prominent jazz and blues singers throughout her childhood. In 1972, Natalie graduated from the University of Massachusetts and moved to Chicago, where she began singing with a band called Black Magic at small clubs and venues. She eventually captured the attention of producers Chuck Jackson and Marvin Yancy, who brought her into a studio to record several tracks. After sending demos out to several potential labels, Natalie was turned down by all of them besides Capitol Records, her father's label, who offered her a contract. With her two producers, she went to Los Angeles to polish off her initial recordings that resulted in her debut album, Inseparable in 1975. The critically acclaimed album spawned two number one hits and earned Natalie a Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. The album was constantly compared to the work of Aretha Franklin, who noted that many of the album's songs were originally offered to her, and when the media started dubbing Natalie the "new Aretha Franklin," a rivalry was sparked between the two prominent singers. Natalie's fame rose throughout the end of the 1970s with the release of two consecutive platinum albums, Unpredictable and Thankful, both release in 1977. Personal problems and drug habits starting in the 1980s caused a detour in her career, but she checked into a rehab facility in 1983 and returned to the top of the charts with her 1987 album Everlasting. Her best-selling album, 1991's Unforgettable... with Love, is a compilation of covers of her father's famous songs that features an iconic duet between Natalie and Nat King Cole of the title track. Natalie continues to release new recorded material, including her 2008 Grammy Award winning effort Still Unforgettable.
