Originally an all male school, Notre Dame only began admitting females in 1972. One cannot visit the campus without going to see the Golden Dome of the main building, a symbol of the school since it was placed there in 1879. Currently, the university is ranked 16th in the nation, and continues to be one of the most prestigious academic and athletic institutions in the United States. Notable alums include former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, legendary football player and coach Knute Rockne, and media personality Phil Donahue.
