Schiller Woods offers visitors a respite from the hustle and bustle of city life as well as plenty of opportunities to spend a day out with friends and family in nature. With open play fields, gently rolling rills, trails and forest paths, there is plenty of ways to enjoy the outdoors from taking a hike through the woods, fishing at the pond, sledding down the hill which is specially maintained to be child safe, picnicking at one of the 13 outdoor shelters, bird watching and more. Nature enthusiasts will appreciate the chance to spot wildlife like the deer as well as several types of birds like great horned owls, winter wrens and Cooper's hawks. A small bit of prairie preserved close to the city offers trails along the East river road to explore birds, plants and insects. During summer, the charming array colorful wildflowers along the stretch are a sight for sore eyes, the area can be explored via the brown trail. Located just about 4 miles from O'Hare International, Dam No. 4 Woods, along with preserves such as Chippewa Woods and Catherine Chevalier Woods, is supported by the fertile banks of River Des Plaines. Dam No. 4 Woods separates the villages of Schiller Park and Harwood Heights with a floodplain thicket, that interestingly, stops flooding in the neighboring communities. As such, the preserve is home to many birds and animal species such as deer, beavers, squirrels and lots more. Dam No. 4 Woods feature some picnic spots and marked as well as unmarked trails, some of which even include riverside hikes.

»Thomas Jefferson Memorial Park

Thomas Jefferson Memorial Park or just Jefferson Park as it is locally known opened its doors in 1921. Named after the country's third president and the architect of the Declaration of Independence, this park features baseball fields, a soccer field, tennis courts, a playground, an outdoor swimming pool, a spray pool, gymnasium, a brick field-house, youth fitness arcade, club-rooms and an auditorium. The field-house is a hub for cultural activity for all ages. This park also hosts regular crafts and arts programs. There are seasonal chamber concerts held here. Amuse the kids with educational fun. A plethora of interactive and energy-consuming exhibits, including a home that can be reconstructed and rearranged and supermarkets and subway cars will delight their imaginations. The Great Kohl Sailing Ship is a stage for imaginary play. They can use nets to catch schools of colorful fake fish or test parents' eardrums by ringing the ship's bell. The Grandma's Attic exhibit is stocked with tons of old clothes. Children can dress up in gowns, suits and shoes to act out imaginary scenes from their parents' and grandparents' lives. Old-fashioned radio is piped in throughout their stay.

West Town Bikes aims to promote bicycling in Chicago and to serve the growing bike population in the city by welcoming bikers of all experience levels to work, learn, and teach bike mechanics in their community workspace. The organization offers several classes and workshops and also hosts open-shop nights where tools are available for anyone to use. West Town Bikes even has a women's night where only women and transgendered bikers and instructors are allowed in the shop. Kids programs, such as BickerBikes, an earn-a-bike summer program, also educate and serve Chicago's youth about bicycle mechanics and cycling skills. The Homan Square Park and Community Center offers some truly excellent recreational facilities for all to enjoy. The campus includes an indoor swimming pool, gymnasium, fitness center, a kitchen and a number of meeting rooms. The center also hosts a variety of classes, programs, events and activities for members of all ages. The park itself is a splendid, grassy lawn where visitors can enjoy a game of basketball or volley ball. While children are sure to enjoy hours of fun at the playground, adults can simply sit back and savor a breath of fresh air and a few moments of peace. The community center also offers a variety of spaces on rent for private events like parties, fundraisers and weddings. The community center is open from 9a to 9p from Monday through Friday, and from 9a to 5p on Saturdays. The park is open throughout the week.
