Based on Victor Hugo's novel of the same name, Les Miserables is a musical drama composed by Claude-Michel Schönberg with lyrics by Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel. Set against a backdrop of 19th-century France, Les Miserables tells the story of Jean Valjean, a thief who has just been released after serving 19 years in jail for stealing a loaf of bread. Once he is free, he changes his identity and interacts with several other characters in a complex plot that explores themes of war, love and sacrifice. With no spoken dialogue outside of the musical numbers, the show has achieved immense popularity in the US as well as Europe with songs like "I Dreamed a Dream" and "On My Own," and has won several awards including a Tony for Best Musical.

Internationally acclaimed violinist Hye-Jin Kim takes the stage with an exciting new ensemble led by Solti Foundation award-winner Christopher Hill for a performance of Samuel Barber's 1939 Violin Concerto. Made up of some of the finest musicians in the region, the South Bay Symphony's inaugural concert, titled "Reflections", is also set to feature Mendelssohn's overture to "Fingal's Cave" and Shostakovich's Symphony No. 1, under the baton of the orchestra's founder and music director Hill. As a leading violinist, Kim's exceptional playing is lauded as much for its emotional depth and power as it is for its technical virtuosity. A native of Korea, she's a multiple award winner, who took home first prize at the '04 Yehudi Menuhin International Competition when she was just 19, and who's played with esteemed orchestras at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center and across the globe.
