    »Gordon Biersch

Taking the microbrewery to another level, this restaurant includes a brewery where beers are constantly being created. Customers love the fresh-brewed German beers served here, including special seasonal brews rarely found outside of Germany. As for the food, a great vegetarian appetizer is the smoky portabella mushroom skewers with crispy polenta and salsa fresca. The fettuccini is excellent, combining andouille sausage with a cajun sauce. The Euro-techno atmosphere is a little slick to be cozy but the food and beer provide plenty of comfort.

    »Joe's Crab Shack

Joe's Crab Shack is a lively restaurant not for those seeking out a quiet seafood meal, but if you are ready to party, this place is it. Periodically, sirens go off, the dance lights spin, music comes up and a carefully-rehearsed but apparently impromptu conga line of waiters and waitresses snakes through the dining area. Messy seafood is the main course here: crab claws, peel and eat shrimp, and other delights from the sea. It is popular with the college-age date crowd and young families.

    »Randy Jones All-American Sports Grill

This addition to the Mission Valley dining roster replaces the sports bar, Trophy's. The atmosphere is still heavy on wide-screen TVs and almost every seat in the house allows viewing of three or more of them at any given moment. Comfy booths line the large area, and a busy bar fills in the rest of the space. The food is classic fare, emphasizing steaks, sandwiches, and ribs, with a few more refined options thrown in for more delicate palates. The service is attentive and a cut above the usual sports-bar casualness. The steaks are generally a better value than the ribs, but the side beans are outstanding and worth ordering extra. Craft and local microbrewery beers are the beverages of choice. -deTraci Regula
