»Maria Muldaur

April 26, 2015 7:00 PM

New York-born artist Maria Muldaur is a folk-blues singer/songwriter who was part of the original American folk music revival of the early 1960s as the vocalist and violinist of groups such as Jim Kweskin & The Jug Band. She released her eponymous debut solo album in 1973, and earned national attention for the hit single "Midnight at the Oasis." After releasing her second album Waitress In a Donut Shop, in 1974, she established a friendship with Grateful Dead and went on to work with the band as a backing vocalist during the late 1970s. Muldaur continued to release her own material during this era and into the 21st century, while also finding time to collaborate with acts such as the Jerry Garcia Band.

»Clark / Nosaj Thing

April 26, 2015 9:00 PM

Jason Chung makes a futuristic style of electronic music that's intelligent and innovative. Performing and releasing music under the moniker Nosaj Thing, Chung makes electronic tunes that are listenable above all else. The music isn't dance intensive, it's calming at times and hard hitting at others, but Chung's main purpose isn't to inspire a livid reaction on the dance floor. Rather, it's to bridge the gap between various musical styles and find common ground with different tones and sounds that inspire similar reactions among people. The Los Angeles-based musician has been making music since 1999 and has made a name for himself in the diverse So Cal electronic music scene.

»The Soft Moon

April 26, 2015 8:30 PM

The Soft Moon is a San Francisco-based group that acts as a reincarnation of bands from the more underground 1980s new wave scene. Led by Luis Vasquez, who sings the majority of his lyrics as heavily-effected screams, will oftentimes repeat a lyric over and over again for the entirety of a song, a tactic that creates a forlorn nature to the band's already dark pop. During live performances, the set typically includes projections of visuals that are inspired by historicalimagery.

»School For Scandal

April 26, 2015 2:00 PM

While a "perpetual motion machine" might not exist, a perpetual "laugh" machine most certainly does. It's called "School for Scandal", and playwright Richard Sheridan built it back in 1777. For more than 235 years, this stage comedy has produced not just titters from the Arched Eyebrow Set but out-and-out guffaws from everyday theatergoers ... and it shows no sign of slowing down. As witty as Wilde, as trenchant as Shaw, Sheridan had a generosity of spirit that keeps this Georgian comedy of manners perennially fresh and funny. Brimming with witty dialogue, mistaken identities, supposed infidelity, eavesdropping and scandal (natch), "The School for Scandal" is a delightfully catty romp. Now the Scuttlemagoon Players present a new modern adaptation by William Wilson staged in the round at Zoomtopia Studio 2.

»Shlohmo North American Tour

April 26, 2015 10:00 PM

Dividing his time between San Francisco and Los Angeles, DJ and producer Henry Laufer, better known as Shlohmo, might be barely out of his teenage years, but has already accomplished more than most DJs wizened by many more years than the young California native. A prominent fixture on the LA/SF Low End Theory scene--most notably home to Daedelus and Flying Lotus--Shlohmo creates fairly minimalist soundscapes laced with dubstep wonk, bouncy techno beats and dark ambient noise. Putting out a steady slew of releases, many of them on the record label he co-founded while still in high school, Shlohmo primarily drops original material, but occasionally remixes other underground electo artists or more mainstream hip-hop emcees. With fans across the US and even in the UK, due to his appearances on BBC 1, Shlohmo has defined himself as another one of Low End Theory's rising stars.
