»Iris Dement

March 27, 2015 8:00 PM

Exposed to country and gospel music as a child, Iris DeMent is a folk singer/songwriter from Arkansas with heavy southern influences. Filled with themes of small town life and religious doubt, her debut album Infamous Angel was released in 1992. Her intimate and introspective songwriting carried through into her Grammy Award-winning follow-up, My Life. Released in 1994, the album solidified her narrative songwriting style and made put DeMent in the sphere of other prominent folk/country artists such as Steve Earle and Emmylou Harris, whom she collaborated with on more than one occasion. She released her fifth studio record titled Sing the Delta, in 2012.

»Seth Avett & Jessica Lea Mayfield

March 27, 2015 5:00 PM

Singer/songwriter Jessica Lea Mayfield is an Ohio-based artist who writes gothic folk songs with a subtle twang. Generally crooning about fairly dark topics - unfaithfulness, insanity and loneliness - Mayfield sings with enough innocence and warmth to keep her music rather charming. Mayfield first appeared as a guest vocalist on The Black Keys album Attack & Release and impressed front-man Dan Auerbach so much that he offered to produce her debut and subsequent albums. After grabbing the attention of revered label Nonesuch, Mayfield released her second album to widespread acclaim in 2011.

»The Velvet Teen

March 27, 2015 9:00 PM

This Santa Rosa, California indie trio was a West Coast secret until its debut album Out of the Fierce Parade was released in 2002. With the help of Death Cab for Cutie member Chris Walla, who produced the album, The Velvet Teen's first studio album was a national success. The band followed the album with a tour alongside well-established indie acts, Minus the Bear, Denali and Death Cab. In 2006, after the untimely death of drummer Logan Whitehurst, who founded The Velvet Teen with vocalist Judah Nagler, the band announced that it would go on making music. The group has continued to make its contemplative and emotional music, carrying The Velvet Teen forward with renewed energy.

»The People's Republic Of Portland

March 27, 2015 7:30 PM

Star of HBO's "Looking" and former "Daily Show" correspondent Lauren Weedman is back with her hit solo show "The People's Republic of Portland". The Rose City has been getting a lot of attention lately -- for leading the way in sustainability, for its food scene and for being, well, weird. Whether she's poking fun at the city's kombucha obsession or its love of ecstatic dance, Weedman brings her unique perspective to all things Portland. Weedman previously performed "The People's Republic of Portland" to sold-out crowds at Portland Center Stage, following her previous hit, "BUST". Now she's reprising this hilarious show at the Gerding Theater at the Armory.
