An avid supporter of social justice organizations such as Resolve and Invisible Children, he uses music, visual art and storytelling to inspire community and lasting change. Brooklyn band Midnight Magic is a 9-piece group reviving the closely related sounds of soul, funk, disco and house music. Lead by singer Caito Sanchez, she acts as requisite diva in the band's revival of diva-led traditions. The group performs live, but often remixes the work of other house and disco producers through out the US. The group's latest remix is for Australian synthpop group Cut Copy, and their second single "Drop Me a Line" came out in spring 2011 on Brooklyn's Permanent Vacation records.

Even though the funk genre as a whole has fallen into a fairly fatigued state, with a good deal of bands that associate themselves to the style of music pandering into cliche territory, there are a few select bands out there keeping funk alive with innovation and a modern approach to song composition. English four-piece The New Mastersounds is one such group. Founded in 1999, the band has managed to gain recognition amid the funk scene with a lively, entirely instrumental sound that showcases snappy drumming, thumpy bass lines and astute organ solos. While The New Mastersounds might not gain widespread popularity or mainstream radio airplay, it is nevertheless a group that's dedicated to keeping the funk genre alive during a time when the music style's tides have almost ebbed into oblivion.

    Portland, OR 97227
The expansive and lustrous four-decade long career of Sir Elton John began at age three, when he began taking piano lessons and found his affinity for 1960s British pop music. By the age of 11 he was awarded a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music in London, and while studying the classical music composition, he felt a constant tug towards his popular rock music. Elton honed his style and approach to song writing by performing in pubs around the UK, eventually releasing his debut album Empty Sky, in 1969. His 1970 eponymous follow-up served as his breakthrough into mainstream music with the iconic ballad "Your Song," and his signature gospel-infused soft rock style. Throughout the next few decades Elton earned vast amounts of critical and commercial success despite an ever-changing landscape of popular music. With his distinctive flamboyant style and tasteful piano rock music, he has grown into one of the more recognizable faces and voices in the music scene.
