Nicknamed The City of Festivals, this Riverside County city was known as Indian Wells in the 1870s. Indio became a city in 1930. Surrounded by mountain ranges on its three sides, it is near the Salton Sink and Lake Cahuilla. It is a recognized National Bird Sanctuary. Agriculture and tourism are the major industries of this town. It hosts many cultural events throughout the year. These include the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, Riverside County Fair, National Date Festival, Indio International Tamale Festival and Stagecoach.
