The Milwaukee River is 75 miles long and literally cuts the city in half. Historically, Native American tribes flourished on the banks of the river, and Marquette and Joliet used the Milwaukee River to navigate down on their way to the Mississippi. Today, both sides of the river are home to residential neighborhoods as well commercial areas, and the river itself offers lovely views form both sides as well as sightseeing cruises and even a boat cruise of the local breweries. The Riverwalk, a stretch of restaurants and cafes along the river, is an enjoyable place to spend the day.
