It was here, on the banks of the York River, that Algonquin Chief Powhatan had his stronghold and favorite home. During the colonial period, one of the first land patents in the county was issued to George Washington's grandfather in 1650. Many plantation homes remain in Gloucester and are open to the public during Historic Garden Week. Gloucester is about two hours from Richmond. Take I-64 east to Route 33. Take 33 to Route 17 to the historic district.
