With its penchant for wearing masks and capes onstage, in addition to describing itself as "the first all-crime fighting, all-surfing rock super-group in history," it's easy to see that the Aquabats don't see the need to take things seriously. The group was part of the third wave ska craze of the mid-90s that saw like-minded bands like Reel Big Fish and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones briefly take over MTV and mainstream-radio airwaves. Lyrical depth is pretty much non-existent in the Aquabats repertoire; however, the touch of new wave influence and tales of skateboarding and boredom in the group's hometown of Orange County help the group stand out from its peers.

The Southern California-based band The Growlers creates a psych-tinged dark-wave brand of surf rock that it describes as "beach goth." With a psychedelic aesthetic combined with campy lyrics and riotous live performances complete with matching outfits, the band held a residency at the Los Angeles venue The Echo during the summer of 2009, the same year its full-length debut Are You In or Are You Out? was released. In the following years, the band began traveling across the country with its reverb-heavy rock and roll, playing major festivals and collecting a widespread group of fans along the way.
