In a city unknown for boutique shops, Laurelwood Shopping Center has an amazing collection of small stores featuring designer clothing for both men and women. Make your way through James Davis, Joseph's, Colony Shop and Talbot's, browsing through the top-notch selection of quality dresses, suits and accessories. Other shops worth visiting are King Furs and Fine Jewelry, the David Lusk Gallery and Cotton Tails for children's clothing. Stop along the way and pick up some locally-made chocolates at Dinstuhl's. Don't miss Davis-Kidd Booksellers, a large independent shop.
Sacks 2 for Kids is a good place to buy gently used clothing for children, from infants through size 20 for boys and junior/preteen for girls. Better organized than a church bazaar, this store uses tickets on these outfits to tell how much they will be marked down week by week—if they do not sell first. The best value by far are the 0 to 9 month outfits many of which still have the retail tags on them. Other items on offer include a small selection of toys, shoes and books, all on consignment.
Do you have a coffeemaker in your hotel room, but would like something other than the hotel's pre-packaged blend? With service faster than a trip to the grocery store, this shop features over a dozen blends that can be freshly ground as you wait. While you're at it, you might also want to pick up some snacks, such as biscotti or Mississippi Cheese Straws (a crunchy, spicy Southern treat). Specialty foods are also here, such as anchovy-stuffed olives, jams from across the South and that Memphis favorite, barbeque sauces, ranging from sweet and smoky to three-alarm hot.
Even though Memphis is flat and surrounded by cotton fields, this haven for outdoors enthusiasts can fit you with snow skis and a snowsuit. Every nook and cranny is filled with all the equipment and toys for outdoor adventures. From D-rings for rappelling to backpacks to canoes, Outdoors Inc. has it all. The parking lot in front is small and crowded, but there are often additional spaces behind the store.
If you are a serial paperback reader, check this place out. You can buy paperbacks—choosing from a stock of thousands of recent fiction, most gently used, for about half the cover price or less. And even better, after you have finished reading your novel, you can return it. Some of the real cheapies can't be returned for credit. Stock includes a wide selection of romance, mystery or suspense and true crime, along with some other selections.
Two shops in one, this establishment caters to both the serious smoker and the avid reader of periodicals. The tobacco shop carries everything from inexpensive pipes to classic meerschaum pipes carved in traditional forms. The humidor is packed with American and imported cigars from makers such as Arturo-Fuente and Dunhill. Have a seat at the table in the back of the store and enjoy some conversation with fellow smokers. The newsroom, meanwhile, has a large selection of magazines covering everything from current news to pop culture. Imported magazines from Britain, Germany, France and Italy are also available. In addition, daily newspapers (both regional and national) can also be found here.

Sports items include pro sports cards such as the traditional baseball cards, but also NASCAR, NFL Football, NBA Basketball and more along with home furnishings and decorations, and college sports memorabilia. This buy, sell and trade store, located in a non-descript shopping center, features an unusually broad selection of reading materials. Unlike many second-hand bookshops, this one sells hardcovers as well as paperbacks. There's a good selection of classics, mystery/suspense novels, science fiction books and westerns. There is even an entire room in the back just for romance novels. There are some gems to be found here, including a few autographed copies, mostly by local authors. Paperbacks are sold for half of the cover price and may be returned for half of the purchase price in exhange for credit toward other books in stock.

There is a whole section of Madeline dolls and accessories. Additionally, there is a nice selection of Lamaze early childhood development toys. Started by a trader when the city was just a crossing point on the Mississippi River, Macy's Oak Court is a Memphis tradition. It is now owned by one of the larger chains, but it continues in its role as one of Memphis' most upscale department stores. It has a particularly good furniture and housewares section, with a comprehensive selection of fine rugs. All of Memphis turns out for Macy's One Day Sales. Stop by the cosmetics department for a consultation, or visit the beauty salon within the store.
