Located at the very heart of the old Hartford City, the Hartford City Courthouse Square Historic District represents the stretch of the land roughly bounded by Water, Walnut, and Monroe Streets and their periphery. Comprising of over 40 contributing structures, the district includes historic churches, houses and Government buildings like the courthouse, the county jail and such. Closely associated with the Indiana Gas Boom of the 1880s this neighborhood has played an important role in shaping the history of the city.
The First Presbyterian Church is said to be the oldest structures in this city. Standing still at a corner on the streets, the church is a beautiful architectural style building. Designed at it's best in the Romanesque Revival style the building features stained glasses which is the most attractive detailed element of this church. The church welcomes people of all ages to visit the church and to learn to worship and learn more about the Christ. The church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.
