Foxygen is an alt-pop duo from Southern California that was formed in 2005. During its early years, the group would mainly play experimental and avant-garde psychedelia, performing sporadically around the Los Angeles area. After retooling its sound into a more narrowly confined and accessible pop format, Foxygen managed to get noticed and signed by the well-respected indie label Jagjaguwar, which released the band's debut LP, Take the Kids Off Broadway, in 2012.

San Diego band Tribal Seeds is one of large contingent of California-based bands devoted to the continued proliferation of Jamaica's greatest gift to the music world, reggae. Combining live instrumentation with electronic components, Tribal Seeds draw on ska, as well as a more recent strain of UK dance music called dubstep. As is the case with even the earliest Jamaican reggae music, bass is one of the foremost draws of reggae music and its major influence on today's electronic music. The Tribal Seeds have built themselves an intimate, loyal following upon these weighty bass foundations, and tour extensively as a result.

Chicago singer-songwriter Joe Pug doesn't take his namesake from the cute dogs of the same name, though he has managed to capture a faithful following much like the animal itself. Pug writes mainly folk and rock inspired songs, in league with the M. Wards and Josh Ritters of the world, however Pug's passion for music has led him to some ingenious self-marketing. Touring extensively, Pug often sells his own tickets through his website, most of them at cheaper prices than ticketing partners. Pug also gives out sampler CDs of his music for free, which he claims has boosted his actual album and song sales dramatically, a prime example of how music as a gift inspires its subsequent purchase.
