Altan is a Celtic folk outfit that hails from Gweedore, County Donegal in Ireland. Weaving a rootsy, folk fabric, the band rose to recognition in the early 1990s as the first Irish traditional music group to be signed to a major label when they earned a deal with Virgin Records in 1994. Though the band released its first album Horse with a Heartin 1989, Altan built its following from the ground up with an ardent touring schedule until it dropped Blackwater, with Virgin in 1996. Its first major label release, the album found its way to listeners outside of traditional music audiences and catapulted the band onto the international stage. Altan has since continued its rigorous touring and recording schedule as one of the most influential Celtic bands in the world.

Celebrated as one of the funniest musicals to grace Broadway in recent years, The Book of Mormon is a religious satire musical written by the Trey Park and Matt Stone, the creators of the famed animated South Park television series (1997-). The story follows two mismatched Mormon missionaries as they haphazardly attempt to bring Mormonism to the tribal peoples of Uganda, with hilarious and often enlightening results. The musical opened in 2011 and almost immediately gained the acclaim of critics and audiences who felt that The Book of Mormon achieves the trifecta of great music, plot and choreography that is found in all Broadway classics.

Southern rock band Blackberry Smoke has been making country rock music since 2000, after forming in Atlanta. The band's music reflects a wide range of influences including blues rock and metal guitar riffs and country style vocals. Lead singer Charlie Starr and guitarist Paul Jackson carry harmonies over steady rhythms sections, a combination that has earned the band critical acclaim, particularly on its 2009 album, Little Piece of Dixie. Already having shared multiple stages with ZZ Top and Lynryd Skynyrd, Blackberry Smoke has been exposed to premier examples of rock bands and is well on its way to making a lasting name for itself in Southern rock history.

Some bands are incapable of creating an original sound that defines the group and solidifies its role in the progression of recorded music. Other bands arrive at grandeur almost inadvertently; one such group is the New York alternative metal outfit Helmet. The band was formed in 1989 and has experienced a number of ups and downs during its tumultuous existence as a band. Despite breaking up in 1998, the band got back together in 2004 and has since dedicated itself to a respectable touring and recording schedule.
