    »The Bard's Town

Located across Bardstown Road, the Bard's Town is a local restaurant that is popular amongst one and all. What sets it apart from the rest is the fact that it serves artisan food and even the names of the dishes are symbolic, savor the Julius Ceasar Salad or simply order Mushroom of Venice. Right from the dishes to the events held here, everything is in sync with the theater theme of the restaurant. Happy hours, live music concerts and similar events are a regular feature at the Bard's Town. That’s not it, there is another surprise awaiting you on the second floor, the Bard's Town Theatre of the restaurant. This theater showcases works of new play-writers and stages innovative plays. »Cumberland Brews

On one of the most bustling blocks of the always-bustling Bardstown Road corridor, Cumberland Brews serves up tall pours of craft-brewed beer and healthy helpings of Southern-fried comfort food. Brews range from traditional English-style classics to decidedly experimental stuff like a pale ale spiced up with a hit of Yerba Mate. To eat, fried fish sandwiches and cheeseburgers go great with a side of fried green tomatoes. Enjoyment of all of the above is amplified by the fast-paced street scene out front viewable through big picture windows (or through your own two eyes if you grab a table out on the sidewalk).

    »Nachbar

Beer nerds take note: The Nachbar is the place to be for beer selection in Louisville. There's a hefty menu of Belgians, Germans, other imports, and the best of the American microbrewery offerings. Lots of bottles, and lots of draft selections too. The walls are of exposed brick, there's billiards and a backyard, and a full bar in case beer isn't your thing. There's rock'n'roll on the jukebox, locals bellied up to the bar, and the decor seems not to have been updated since the '70s. See website for beer list, photos and more.

    »Lisa's Oak Street Lounge

Lisa's is one of Louisville's fine, aged, neighborhood dive bars. It's dark and dank and full of locals. Occasional live music events bring in outsiders from time to time, but this place's bread and butter is cold cans of cheap beer. Located on a stretch of East Oak Street halfway between downtown and the Bardstown Road area, Lisa's is the perfect place to stop for a cold one on the way from one side of town to the other. See website for photos and more.

    »Magnolia Bar & Grill

While much of Old Louisville can be exactly that -- OLD -- Mag Bar takes a step (albeit a baby step) in the direction of the new. That means in a neighborhood full of bed and breakfasts trafficking in chamber music and merlot, this place offers rock and roll and Miller High Life. Not cutting edge exactly, but welcome respite from the mothballs around the corner. The bar's facade is made up of big plate-glass windows, so the sun shines in warmly right up to the bitter end of Happy Hour. Good conversation, cold beer, and good music. This is Mag Bar.
