    »Jamey Johnson

    August 15, 2014 8:00 PM

Joamey Johnson got his start in the music industry with BNA Records, and the Alabama-born country singer/songwriter released his debut album TheDollar, in 2006. Though the lead single peaked at number 14 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, the follow up single failed to chart and Johnson was consequently dropped form his label. Johnson began focusing on his songwriting and would go on to pen songs for several other artists, including the number one country music hit, "Give It Away," which he co-wrote with Bill Anderson and Cannon for George Strait. After releasing his 2008 album That Lonesome Song, exclusively online Johnson earned the attention of Mercury Nashville Records who offered him a deal and re-released his second album. That Lonesome Song became certified gold by 2009, marking the beginning of several cornerstone moments in Johnson's career, including his nominations for the 2009 CMA Award for New Artist of the Year as well as the 2010 Academy of Country Music Award for Top New Solo Vocalist. In 2011 he joined Kid Rock on his Born Free Tour and played a main stage set at Willie Nelson's Country Throwdown.

    »Marty Stuart and Connie Smith

    September 13, 2014 8:00 PM

John Martin Stuart goes by his nickname Marty Stuart and is widely known for his blend of classic country and rockabilly music. Born in Philadelphia, Stuart developed a taste for country music that prompted him to teach himself how to play the guitar and mandolin. Before he was even a teenager, he was performing with the bluegrass band The Sullivans. After meeting Lester Flatt guitarist Roland White, Stuart was invited to be a permanent part of the band and played with it broke up in 1978. Stuart moved on to work with fiddler Vassar Clements, guitarist Doc Watson and perhaps most notably, he joined Johnny Cash's back up band in 1980. His initial solo albums With a Little Help From My Friends and Busy Bee Cafe, respectively from 1979 and 1982, were created strictly out of a bluegrass lens and never saw commercial success. Stuart left Johnny Cash's band in 1985 to seriously pursue a solo career. Signed to MCA Records, he released his first acclaimed album in 1989 titled Hillbilly Rock, which earned him praise for incorporating rockabilly with southern honky tonk sounds. Over the next two decades, Stuart recorded 14 studio albums, published photos and articles covering the country music scene, received his own country music television show and served on the board of the Country Music Foundation, submerging himself in everything country and solidifying his name as one of the most versatile musicians in the genre.

    »Crystal Gayle

    September 19, 2014 7:30 PM

Born in Paintsville, Kentucky to a poor family, Brenda Gail Webb would have a unique upbringing that'd untimely help shape her to become the cross-over country singer Crystal Gayle. The youngest of eight children--well-known singing phenom Loretta Lynn, Gail's sister, was the second of the eight--Gail was the family's only child to be born in a hospital. Her family would go on to move to Wabash, Indiana when she was four and although she was initially shy, her mother would encourage her to sing songs for visitors who were passing through the family's house. Inspired by her sister's burgeoning career as a singer/songwriter, Gale picked up a guitar and learned how to play. After writing a few songs, Lynn helped secure a recording contract for her younger sibling and helped her with a proper stage name that people would remember, after driving by a Krystal Hamburgers chain and being stuck by the impressive locution of the word Krystal, which eventually turned into Crystal. Though she struggled to find a sizable listening base during her formative career as a singer, Gayle managed to find cross-over appeal in the late 1970s and even managed to duet with alternative crooner Tom Waits on the soundtrack to the 1982 Francis Ford Coppola film One From the Heart.
