The Immanuel Baptist Church of Lexington uses modern and engaging ways to connect with members and worshipers. Established in 1789, First United Methodist Church is the oldest of its kind in town. Their historic edifice was built in 1907 in Colonial Revival style and is made up of cut stone. Its massive portico with huge columns featuring fluted shafts, Ionic capitals and ornate cornice at the entrance is impressive. Its serene ambiance is accentuated by arched stained glass windows, raised pulpit and white decorative elements. Second Presbyterian Church has its roots back to 1813 when it began as Market Street Church. It got its present name in 1828 and its current edifice was built in 1924. This American Gothic building has many buttresses and a lovely cross-shaped sanctuary. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. This congregation has many activities for its members according to their age group. Besides regular Sunday meetings, they have programs for kids and youth as well as weekly prayer groups and bible studies.
Christ Church Cathedral was established in 1796 though the present structure was built in 1848 by Thomas Lewinski, a renowned Lexington architect. This magnificent Gothic Revival edifice is a dominating feature in Downtown Lexington's skyline and history. It was the first Episcopal congregation in town and is the oldest of its kind in the state. Its interiors are just as stately as its facade. Get impressed by stunning stained glass windows, buttresses, arches and the nave. It is the base of The Episcopal Diocese of Lexington. It is also renowned for its music and is a gallery space for religious art as well.
Downtown Lexington is a wonderful place to explore and has many historical structures all around it. Central Christian Church is affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and was founded in 1816. Built on the remains of a former Masonic temple in 1894, this Richardsonian Romanesque edifice is one of the attractive churches in town. It was renovated in 1935 after a fire ravaged it. Their campus is spread across four acres (1.62 hectares), it features the the beautiful sanctuary, a prayer garden and many other buildings for various church activities. The exquisite stained glass windows depicting various Biblical scenes are enthralling. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.
First Presbyterian Church has two entrances one from the Mill Street end which gives you the beautiful view of its mighty steeple and the other from the Market Street end. This Reform Jewish congregation was established for Jewish immigrants for their spiritual growth and social activities. Rooted deeply in its local community, it regularly hosts Torah study, worship services and other community related events.
