Established in 1908 solely for women, the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma has the unique distinction of being America's only public liberal arts college. The faculty have all been carefully chosen so as to allow for a friendly climate where students and teachers can interact with each other. The beautiful building which has completed a century is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Sports like basketball, tennis, flag football, sand volleyball and others are greatly encouraged along with community events and extra curricular activities.
Named after John Morris Sheppard, a Texan senator, Sheppard Air Force Base was established in 1941. It is the base of the 80th Flying Training Wing (80th FTW) and 82d Training Wing. It is the nation's premier military and technical institution. The non-flying wing trains all military officers including civilians in medical, technology and field training. While the 80th FTW equips fighter pilots and has 13 nations manning this project to arm not only airmen but also marines, naval officers and soldiers.
The Wichita River runs through this large park and there are tr ails connecting the park to the waterfall.
River Bend Nature Center at Wichita Falls, is an excellent space that abounds with nature. The center offers its visitors not only an opportunity to explore the many natural wonders within its grounds but also organizes educational programs and events that help spread awareness regarding nature conservation and environmental issues. The center features a variety of indoor and outdoor spaces so as to meet the varying preferences of visitors of every age. Peyton's Place (butterfly enclosure), Ruby N. Priddy Butterfly and Nature Conservatory, and the Bryant Edward's Learning Center with its live exhibits are some of the center's most popular attractions. There are a number of nature trails, a picnic area and even a library, making this not only a valuable educational resource, but also a great place to spend a relaxing day in the lap of nature without having to leave the city.
Covering approximately 13,500 acres with 106 miles of shoreline, this State park offers a variety of activities including camping, swimming, boating, picnicking, and wildlife observation. Hiking and equestrian trails are also on site.
Art on the Green is a sculpture garden located on the grounds of The Kemp Center for the Arts. This fabulous garden features a collection of eight permanent exhibits, with ten additional sculptures acquired from all over the globe for a period of one year. Every May new sculptures are brought in while those from the previous year are returned home. Beautifully lit up every night, the garden has come to be a well known land mark at Wichita Falls.
