»Beer & Hymns Featuring Pawn Shop Kings

April 19, 2015 6:00 PM

Upbeat, versatile and original, Hymns falls firmly within the spectrum to be the face of new indie rock. The New York City-based band blends a long history of artists and genres, into their own eclectic, catchy and ever-inventive repertoire. Formed in 2005 by a pair of childhood friends, the now four-piece band has been gaining speed after their first two full-length releases and an EP that have all garnered major critical attention. Having played with and opened for artists such as Daniel Johnston and Ben Kweller, these rockers are surely finding a niche of their own in the broad new spectrum of indie tunes.

»Marriott Theatre for Young Audiences: The Princess and The Pea

April 19, 2015 10:00 AM

Written by Hans Christian Andersen, The Princes and the Pea is a beloved fairy tale that tells the story of a prince who is seeking a princess, though his quest for a wife proves difficult, as he cannot be certain that any of the women he meets are true princesses. When a young woman appears at the castle doors seeking shelter from a stormy, he and his mother invite her in to stay for the night. While the mystery woman claims she is a princess, the queen decides to test her guest's honor by placing a single pea under 20 mattresses and 20 feather beds on the bed the woman is to sleep on. The next morning, the woman regales the queen with her sleepless night, claiming that she was kept awake by something hard in the bed. With this knowledge, the prince rejoiced and decides to marry her, because only a real princess would have the sensitivity to feel a pea through so much bedding.

»Steve Winwood

April 19, 2015 8:00 PM

Steve Winwood is one of the more influential yet highly underrated guitarists of all-time. If you name drop him amongst a group of people under the age of 35, there's a good chance 95% of the crew wont know who he is. The people who do know him are ardent followers, though. And looking at it from an elevated perspective, it's better to have a small yet dedicated group of followers as opposed to a wide group of fans that blindly follows its musical heroes in whatever direction is laid out for them. Winwood has been a member of the influential group Traffic as well as Blind Faith, and the friendships he made in these two groups have managed to produce some extremely listenable blues based rock music. Winwood's solo career pulls heavily from Traffic and Blind Faith as well as his respectable solo career that he has been chugging away with since his group's implosions in the mid '70s.

»Tsugaru Shamisen & Taiko- Powerful New Sounds From Japan

April 19, 2015 3:00 PM

Please join Anderson Japanese Gardens, Japan America Society of Chicago and NDK America on Sunday, April 19th. Doors will open at 2:30pm. We are honored to host such amazing musicians and to offer such a unique event for Rockford! Mr. Koji Yamaguchi  and Mr. Yoshihiko Fueki will play the traditional Japanese instruments Tsugaru Shamisen and Taiko.  About Tsugaru Shamisen:                   Tsugaru-Shamisen is one of the versions of Shamisen, a three stringed Japanese Lute, specially evolved in "Tsugaru" region in the northern part of Japan. The instrument was initially used by wandering blind artists who perform in front of people's house for their living in Tsugaru. Because of the heavy snowfall and painful long winter, Tsugaru people were in need of music as an emotional relief to struggle with severe life there. Although, by the middle of the 19th century, Tsugaru-Shamisen  was used simply to provide background music to folk singers, it came to be appreciated gradually as a solo or ensemble instrument. As a solo instrument, pieces for Tsugaru-Shamisen require very high technique for speedy playing, refined sense of dynamic rhythm and creativity for improvisation, like jazz music. Tsugaru-Shamisen and its music will give audiences an impression of the strength of human as well as tenderness.  About Taiko: Wadaiko, or Taiko for short, are traditional Japanese drums. They are used to perform at festivals and other events, infusing them with energy and listeners with excitement. Today, Japanese Taiko performances with other instruments and spanning various genres, such as classic and jazz music, are thriving as the instrument finds fans across the world.  Examples of Mr. Koji Yamaguchi  and Mr. Yoshihiko Fueki stunning performances can be found on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ug6O7RD8j1Q
