The Comedy Pigs return to the Maryland Ensemble Theatre in Frederick for new evenings of sketch and improv hilarity. »Haddon Hall

February 28, 2015 8:00 PM

The romantic legend of Dorothy Vernon, the daughter of a wealthy British landowner, who scandalized society by eloping with her true love instead of submitting to an arranged marriage, comes to the stage courtesy of the Victorian Lyric Opera Company. Still a major British tourist attraction today, the English country house known as Haddon Hall provides the proper setting for this 19th-century social satire, written by composer Arthur Sullivan shortly after his famed 1889 breakup with librettist W.S. Gilbert. A talented cast of more than 30 is set to appear in this new production at Rockville's F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre. The company will also host a community outreach matinee, featuring a craft activity for kids, backstage tours and more.

»Next To Her

February 28, 2015 6:45 PM

A compelling film that's "never quite heading where you expect it to," ("Hollywood Reporter") this impactful drama, directed by Asaf Korfman, was invited to screen at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival. It's inspired by the real-life experiences of Korfman's wife, Liron Ben-Shlush, who wrote and stars in the film, delivering a performance that is truly remarkable. "Next to Her" tells the story of Chelli, who's devoted most of her life to raising her mentally disabled sister Gabby. Forced to place Gabby in a day-care center by a social worker who's displeased to discover that she leaves her sister home alone while she goes to work, Chelli decides that she may finally have time to include a man in her life. And she does. Zohar, who begins to date Chelli, quickly becomes a fixture in the sisters' lives -- and the tangled triangle into which they're drawn will test them all. This emotional powerhouse screens at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington as part of the Washington Jewish Film Festival.

»Anywhere Else

February 28, 2015 8:45 PM

When Noa, an Israeli student living in Berlin with her boyfriend Jörg, receives some distinctly disappointing news about her graduate thesis project, she seizes the opportunity to fly back to Israel on a whim. Noa's hope is that a taste of home -- with its sunshine, native language and, of course, her family -- might just do her some good. But lovable though they may be, her family's dysfunctions can't be kept from bubbling to the surface ... especially when Jörg shows up unannounced at the trickiest of times: Memorial Day. An engaging and sympathetic narrative of hidden (and not-so-hidden) grievances, "Anywhere Else", directed by Ester Amrami, screens at the JCC of Greater Washington as part of the Washington Jewish Film Festival.
