Close to I-95 on the north side of city, this brewery lets you watch the bottling process from a 20-foot open-air observation area and sample the finished product in the hospitality room. You must be 21 or older, of course. Children are welcome on the tour, which includes a look at a small museum chronicling the history of Busch beer and the Busch family with a gift shop on site. Brewery tours are free and guided tours take place hourly with self-guided tours permitted at any time the brewery is open.
The Catty Shack Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary is non-profit organization dedicated to providing a safe and nurturing home to endangered species of large cats. Beside this, Catty Shack's aim is to educate the public about the difficulties these majestic creatures face, both in their natural habitats and in captivity. Once the cats are rescued, they become permanent residents at the sanctuary for the rest of their days. Public and school tours are offered, giving the public a great chance to learn more about these endangered felines — as well as a chance to feed them!
Visit white rhinos, crocodiles, lions and more on a Plains of Africa tour at The Jacksonville Zoo. An overlook area allows visitors to observe elephants and giraffes. Native Florida wildlife can also be seen, including the jaguar, endangered Florida panther and American alligator. There is so much to see here that you should allow an entire day to catch it all! Refreshments are available throughout the park.
Restore yourself and head back to nature at this serene 50-acre Bethesda Park, which offers a variety of activities and amenities for individuals and groups in a picturesque natural setting. Groups should check out one of their fully equipped cabins or central lodge rooms. You will find plenty of picnic areas, as well as a boardwalk and nature trail. There is also a large lake stocked for fishing. Bethesda Park is located a few miles northwest of downtown Jacksonville.
Yellow Bluff Fort is a preserved Confederate earthen fortification and lookout tower built in 1862 to prevent Union gunboats from attacking Jacksonville. It is a labyrinth of trenches and earthworks built by Confederate soldiers and is located directly on the St Johns River. When it was built, it housed impressive cannons to ward off attacks from Union forces. Interestingly, the fort never saw any action during the Civil War but changed hands four times during that grim altercation. Admission to the fort is free.
The Swisher Theater, located at The Jacksonville University opened its doors to much fanfare in January 2007. The theater is a state-of-the-art teaching and performance center. Students gain experience with industry-standard lighting and stage controls while presenting University and public performances—a great advantage to students who want to make the stage their career. Modernized and with the latest technology, watching plays, performances and acts here is a pleasure.
This historic neighborhood of Springfield, is located in the heart of Jacksonville. Founded in 1869, Springfield includes magnificent architecture from the 1800s and 1900s. In the early 20th Century, it was considered as the 'wealthy suburb' as this neighborhood contained the homes of many affluent residents of the city. This is one of the liveliest neighborhood's in Jacksonville; it is rife with events like community meets, art walks, parties, home tours and more.
The Al-Salaam Mosque is located in the Historic Springfield District. The mosque also has a number of other activities like Educational workshops, Lectures and meetings taken by Imam Umar Abdul Sharif. This place has a gift shop and everyone is welcomed to visit the mosque and the shop.
Praising the Lord and lighting a candle of hope at the Abyssinia Missionary Baptist Church is surely going as close to Him as possible. Following religion with complete faith and responsibility is what they preach here, and lead by example with their involvement in community service. Of course, all of this for the betterment and service to mankind. Books and sermons, audio and video to guide you on the right path are available at the church store. Abyssinia New Sanctuary is located within the church.
Located off Main Street in Downtown Jacksonville, Karpeles Manuscript Library is billed as the world's largest holding of historical documents on literature, medicine, science, music and anthropology. Rare books and documents, some a century old, are on display here to the public. This library has seven different locations throughout the country, so it frequently rotates its historical exhibits before returning them to the archive. You can visit again and again without seeing the same documents twice.
Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church welcomes everyone with their promise of love and acceptance. The church touches lives with the power of the word of God. Their mission is 'Magnifying Jesus through worship and the Word, Moving believers in Jesus toward maturity and ministry, and Making Jesus known to our neighbors and the nations'. They also have bible studies and youth events and have a very engaging and loving community.
First Baptist Church of Jacksonville established in 1838 is the third oldest church in Jacksonville. The church was reconstructed in 1903, after a major fire gutted the core structure of the building. The church community has grown tremendously since its inception. Sunday Worship and Sunday School are popular with the faithfuls. The church also houses a library and bookstore.
