Mycincinnati Ambassador Ensemble Concert + Film Screening
Cincinnati Art MuseumApril 19, 2015 1:00 PM
953 Eden Park Drive
Cincinnati, OH 45202
THE PROGRAM The MYCincinnati Ambassador Ensemble is a string sextet of young Price Hill musicians (ages 12-15) led by violinist, composer, and Cincinnati Art Ambassador Fellow Eddy Kwon. For the 2014-15 school year, the group engaged in weekly critical discussions around identity (including race, gender, and class), social justice, power, and the artist as an agent of change. Using these riveting and intense conversations as creative inspiration, Eddy worked with the students to compose a performance work that organically combines chamber music with themes of social justice. Artistically avant-garde, socially critical, and radiating with youthful energy, the final work is a culmination and celebration of a years effort and collective growth. The project is supported by the City of Cincinnati Art Ambassador Fellowships. The entire process -- from the initial discussions to the intense rehearsals -- has been documented by world-renowned photographer Michael Wilson. He and his son, Henry, have crafted a beautiful documentary film that will be screened at the beginning of the event.  *** After the film screening and performance, up to 30 audience members will be able to participate in an exclusive hands-on musical workshop led by the students! This will be a one-time only opportunity, exclusive to the Art Museum event. Space is very limited so reserve your spot now! ***   ENSEMBLE MEMBERS Eddy Kwon, violin and composition Rashel Flores, violin Kalla Ervin, violin Sebastian Schemmel, violin Kerrie Lee, viola Keyonte Ervin, cello Ziyad Tooles, double bass   ABOUT EDDY Eddy Kwon is a violinist, composer, improviser, and teaching artist living in Northside, Cincinnati. Originally from St. Paul, Minnesota, Eddy attended the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music as a Cincinnatus Presidential Full Scholar, graduating with a degree in Jazz Studies. He is founding member of the avant folk quartet The Happy Maladies and Assistant Director of MYCincinnati, a free, daily youth orchestra program in Price Hill. Eddy has been featured as an improviser, composer, and songwriter at the Constella Festival of Music and Fine Art, MidPoint Music Festival, the Contemporary Arts Center, and the Clifton Cultural Arts Center. New composition commissions include a work for the Contemporary Arts Center for their 2015-16 season. In 2014, Eddy was awarded the Arts Ambassador Fellowship from the City of Cincinnati to realize the Ambassador Ensemble project with his students at MYCincinnati.
