Located 32 miles (52 kilometers) outside of Chicago, the Middlefork Savannah Forest Preserve is a beautiful piece of forest and grasslands. This ecological research and education site serves as an outdoor classroom to local schools and universities as well as a natural recreation area. Open to the public, the reserve offers a variety of activities to the outdoor enthusiast from hiking and bicycling and is perfect for an afternoon picnic. In the winter time, the preserve turns into a popular cross-country skiing location. Located throughout are trailside exhibit panels, an education center, windmill and children's maize. Be advised, in order to protect the wildlife, no dogs are allowed.
Highland Park Country Club is owned by the City of Highland Park. It was designed by Dick Nugent Associates Redesign and has challenges in the form of sand bunkers and water hazards. It is a course that can by played by an amateur as well as a pro. This beautiful country club also has other amenities for its visitors and is used for weddings and banquets.

The Wilmot Mountain is a magnificent ski area, swanked by as many as 25 runs and 5 terrain parks. It is primly located at the Kenosha County in Wisconsin. Comparatively a small hill, it stands as a fine recreational avenue with terrific runs spread over a massive 120 acres (0.49 square kilometers) skiable area. One can also indulge in snowmaking and stellar night skiing. It ably arranges for alpine racing and snow tubing. The Iron Kettle Banquet is an enticing hall and the site also brags of two bar areas.
Bristol Oaks Golf Course is an 18-hole public golf course. Opened in 1964, it is set on a subtle rolling landscape. Lined with trees and water features, this link will test the skills of an experienced golfer. It also a practice field for amateurs to hone their game.
This family-owned equestrian center offers rding lessons including English (basic dressage, hunt seat and jumping), Western Pleasure, and Driving (miniature horses). Lessons include grooming and saddling (or harnessing), as well as horse care. Limited boarding is available.
Arlington International Race Course is one of the best race courses in the world. Millions of people come every August to watch the Arlington Million Race, which has recently become a part of World Series Racing Championship. It is an ideal place for a family outing as the premises are resplendent with diverse hues. There is also a Kids Junior Jockey Club for the younger ones. Call in advance for tickets.
Now an Olympic sport, curling is a sport that can be played by people of all ages and is often a multigenerational family sport. This facility is one of just three, in the Chicago-area. It includes four "sheets" of ice (the playing area for curling), men's and women's locker rooms, a fully equipped kitchen, a bar, and an extensive lounge area and viewing gallery. During the curling season, Learn2Curl workshops, are offered, in which newcomers are introduced to the game and given a chance to try out the sport.
This is a public golf course with large greens, and wide open fairways. A great course for senior citizens, a creek comes into play on four holes. Tee time reservations are taken for weekends only.

The Great Kohl Sailing Ship is a stage for imaginary play. They can use nets to catch schools of colorful fake fish or test parents' eardrums by ringing the ship's bell. The Grandma's Attic exhibit is stocked with tons of old clothes. Children can dress up in gowns, suits and shoes to act out imaginary scenes from their parents' and grandparents' lives. Old-fashioned radio is piped in throughout their stay.
