»King Tuff

January 10, 2015

Hailing from Brattleboro, Vermont King Tuff is a psychedelic garage rock band centered around front man Kyle Thomas, who adopted the alter ego King Tuff while he was a teenager playing in folk bands. Though he is probably best known for his work on J. Mascis' side project Witch, Thomas formed a band in 2008, began mixing 1960s garage rock with 1970s glam rock and eventually ended up with King Tuff's debut album, Was Dead. After touring with Hunx & his Punx and Witch and releasing an album with his power pop band Happy Birthday, Thomas returned his focus to King Tuff and released the band's eponymous follow-up album in 2012 with retro-pop elements.

»Pam Tillis and Lorrie Morgan

January 10, 2015 8:00 PM

The daughter of legendary country singer Mel Tillis, Pam Tillis has carried on her father's legacy for modern listeners with a strong career all her own. Raised in the country music hub of Nashville, she was musically inclined and playing various instruments by the time she hit her teens. As 16, she was in a tragic car accident that left her with multiple life-threatening injuries. After a series of successful surgical reconstruction surgeries however, Tillis was back on her feet and more committed than ever to finding success with her country roots and powerful voice. Back in Nashville, her work as a songwriter found her songs being picked up by the likes of Martina McBride, Gloria Gaynor and Conway Twitty. But it's her solo work, a combination of vocal country and twangy pop ballads, that has made her a country music star as well-revered as her father.

»Engelbert Humperdinck

January 15, 2015 8:00 PM

Born Arnold Dorsey, UK crooner Engelbert Humperdinck knew early on that he wanted to be a musician, but had difficulty finding success after a decade of singing in night clubs. However, in the late 1960s, after changing his given name to that of the German composer, Humperdinck signed to Decca, which put out his single "Release Me," a track that topped the charts in the US and UK, impressively preventing the Beatles song "Strawberry Fields Forever" from ever obtaining the number one slot in the band's native country. With his smoothly sung lyrics about love and his charming good looks, the singer was bestowed with the nickname "King of Romance," and to this day continues to perform to smitten fans around the world.

»Mosc Masterworks 3: Strauss

January 24, 2015 7:30 PM

Prominent German composer Richard Strauss was at a creative peak during the 1930's, when the Nazis occupied much of Germany. Several Nazi officials, such as Adolf Hitler and Joseph Goebbels, sought to manipulate his artistic power to their advantage. Due to strong arm tactics, Strauss eventually aligned with the emerging superpower and wrote compositions for the Nazi party. Because he was not a Nazi sympathizer, his work from this period was sub-par. After the defeat of the Nazis Strauss went on to have a successful career, and became known as a prominent composer. Strauss's innovations in orchestration featured subtle flourishes set within an uncanny, harmonic style.
