It has had its fair share of controversies but the Spear Hunting Museum which opened its doors in 2006 has garnered enough publicity to pique the interest of people visiting this place. Established by Gene Morris, a self confessed ‘world’s greatest spear hunter’, who died while spear hunting in 2012. On display are the animals that he speared such as lions, zebras, goats, alligators, elk and more. The specially designed spears are also on exhibit here.
Founded in 1984, the American Sport Art Museum & Archives (ASAMA)is committed to the collection, preservation and showcasing of sports, literature and art in this part of Alabama. Boasting a collection of over 1000 paintings, photographs, memorabilia, sculptures, posters and prints, the aim is simply to exhibit what a crucial role the media plays in capturing slices of an athlete's life. With free admission, ASAMA is a proven winner with tourists and kids who enjoy the myriad of events which beckon.
If there is a Tom Cruise from Top Gun hiding inside you, a visit to the National Naval Aviation Museum should make for an inspiring experience. The museum is recognized as one of the largest aviation museums in the world with over 150 aircrafts and 4000 artifacts on display. Watch swooping fighter planes, biplanes that have survived aerial battles, helicopters, aircraft carriers and more. You can also find old documents, vintage uniforms, personal letters written during the war, relics and other memorabilia. Visit the thriving library that has photographs, books, technical manuals, CDs and DVDs dedicated to aviation. And if that's not enough, you could shop for clothes, books and posters at the museum store or catch some entertainment at the IMAX located within the premises. Truly a place that gives you a sky-high experience!
