This 33,000-acre reservoir is a superb location for fishing and other water sports. The area features 105 miles of beautiful shoreline.
This sprawling state park is located just outside of Jackson and incorporates over 500 acres of woodlands. In addition to several miles of hiking and nature trails, the park features a public nine-hole golf course with a clubhouse and driving range, meeting rooms, a swimming pool, picnic areas, playgrounds and tennis courts. Boat rentals are available on the park's lake, and fishing is permitted in season. For real outdoorsmen, campsites are provided for both recreational vehicles and tents. The engaging, educational Mississippi Museum of Natural Science is located nearby.
The name is a little bit deceiving, as this full-scale entertainment Mecca is home to much more than just great golf. Created by the damming of Jackson's Pearl River, this 50 square-mile expanse of water provides sailing, skiing, trophy-sized bass fishing and all manner of water sports to area residents and guests. Four marinas dot the shoreline, offering boat and motor rental, fishing and sailing supplies, and a host of quaint eateries. Camping and picnicking facilities are also to be found within the numerous parks and recreation areas that line the shores. This stunning man-made landmark can be found just east of Ridgeland, about a 15-minute trip outside of Jackson.
For 50 years, this vibrant operation has produced theatrical events for Mississippi's young ones as well as for kids of all ages. A strictly volunteer organization, this non-profit collection of amateur enthusiasts and theater professionals is a fine example of a community coming together to provide a valuable service to the public. For each year's production, volunteers select the cast, gather props, design costumes and promote the event, which is seen by more than 10,000 children every winter.
