»Trumpeter Stephen Burns

March 08, 2015 2:00 PM

Now in its 90th season, Maestro Max Hobart and the Boston Civic Symphony bring award-winning trumpet virtuoso and composer Stephen Burns into the solo spotlight for a rousing concert, featuring the world premiere of a concerto for the instrument by Thomas Oboe Lee. The winner of a prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, Burns' artistry led "The New York Times" to proclaim, "...he displays not only sonic brilliance and technical accomplishment, but he is also a polished musician. His virtuosic control of breath, tone and fingering, is tempered with intelligence and taste." The performance is set to open with Burns' own "Fanfare for Freedom", followed by Honegger's "Pastorale d'ete", Lee's new work, and wraps up with guest conductor Taichi Fukumura at the baton for Berlioz's "Symphonie Fantastique".

»Nevermore - The Imaginary Life & Mysterious Death Of Edgar Allan Poe

March 09, 2015 7:00 PM

Among Edgar Allan Poe's fictional works such as "The Pit and the Pendulum", "The Raven" and "The Tell-Tale Heart", none were as macabre or troubling as his own life story. Now the tortured personal history of the great horror writer (and one-time New York resident) comes to New World Stages in "Nevermore", a wildly entertaining musical play packed with stunning stagecraft and hauntingly beautiful songs. At times disturbing, but always charming, "Nevermore" is a uniquely powerful story of love, internal demons and artistic self-discovery that will transport you into the mind of one of America's most complicated literary figures.

»Archive

March 10, 2015 7:00 PM

London-based rock band Archive is an electronic/progressive rock act that was formed in 1994 by Darius Keeler and Danny Griffiths after the dissolution of their former breakbeat group, Genaside II. Keeler and Griffiths joined forces with vocalist Roya Arab and rapper Rosko John to release Archive's debut album, Londinium, in 1996 with a mix of dark trip hop, electronica and breakbeat sounds sewn together with electronic guitar arrangements. Arab and John left the group shortly after the album release, but Archive continued with several different lineups and went on to release seven more albums between 1999 and 2012. The band dropped its eighth studio album, With Us Until You're Dead, in 2012.

»The Vienna Boys Choir

March 13, 2015 7:30 PM

Wiener Sängerknaben, German for The Vienna Boys' Choir, is one of the most well-known choirs in the world. Dating back 1924, the Vienna Boys' Choir has a history of excellence that was challenged in 2001 when it came under heavy pressure and criticism to modernize. After the establishment of a rival choir school that was known to be more relaxed and lucrative, the Vienna Boys' Choir had to recruit boys for the first time in its long history. In an effort to modernize its approach to music, the ensemble changed its uniform, began recording pop music and even began allowing the boys to dance as they sing. The Vienna Boys' Choir is composed of about 100 trebles and altos, ranging from the ages of ten to 14, that are broken up into four separate touring choirs: Bruckner, Mozart, Shubert and Haydn. Despite allegations of sexual abuse from former choir members, each group of The Vienna Boys' Choir performs approximately 300 concerts in front of nearly half a million people each year.
