Take a trip away from downtown and come down to Osteria Fasulo to experience rustic Italian cuisine in a country-like and elegant atmosphere. Owner/Head Chef Leonardo Fasulo puts forth an eclectic menu that highlights authentic Italian creations and fresh ingredients sourced from local purveyors; stand-out dishes being the Gnocchi Ripieni, Cioppino, Crema Appassionata and Taglierini al Rosmarino. A handpicked wine list accompanies the menu selections, rounding off each course with an added finesse. The ambiance is such that befits romantic dinners and special occasions. Apart from the cozy dining room, the backyard patio is a favored choice with the patrons. Reservations are welcomed.
The dining room at Raja Indian Cuisine is pleasant and cool, with creamy plaster walls and earth tones throughout. The menu features include a variety of "shubh shuruat" (exotic appetizers), "shorbus" (dal or muilugatawny soups), and tandoori breads like "chapati", "nan," or "paratha.” The earthy smells of curry waft from the kitchen (not too pungently) as you wait for entrees including seafood, lamb, vegetarian, rice specialties or a curry incorporating these ingredients. The 14-course lunch special buffet is reasonably priced.
The breakfast at Delta Of Venus features homemade granola, three-egg omelets and organic tofu scrambles. The service is casual but effective. Taking your order at the wooden counter inside, the cashier doubles as a waiter and brings the quickly executed dish to your table. The menu also features coffee drinks, fresh salads, homemade soups and a variety of sandwiches for lunch. You'll find a table in one of the three dining rooms indoors or on the patio.
As pastry chef at San Francisco's Ritz-Carlton Hotel, proprietor May Lou Hedriana loved her work but could not deny the urge to experiment and explore. Now at the "dessert cafe" she indulges these urges and you can taste the results. From truffles to passion-fruit mousse cake she has created, a dessert menu designed to tickle your sweet tooth. Ciocolat has a full line of breakfast pastries. Chocolate is Hedriana's true passion, and you will find its rich taste in a variety of items on the menu.
Formerly called Murder Burger, Redrum patrons consider this burger joint to be the best in town. Impressive is "The Annihilator," weighing in with one pound of prime cut meat, all the fixings, and a huge side order of fries. You can choose from a variety of fixings, from barbeque sauce to jalapeno peppers and pesto. Other burgers include the Veggie, Pattymelt and the Turkey burger. For those wishing to broaden their culinary experience, an Ostrich burger is offered. Pastrami, fish and real chicken sandwiches are also popular. The menu offers a large variety of potato and veggie side dishes.
The coffee is always fresh here at Mishka's Cafe, thanks to the ancient gigantic coffee grinder/roaster sitting amidst the tables in this busy cafe. There is an eclectic mix of sandwiches and salads as well as calzones, wraps, ice cream, smoothies and Italian sodas among other delicacies. In addition to the aroma of coffee the atmosphere is culturally spiced up with local musicians playing favorite numbers.
Regarded by many Davis residents as the best Thai food in town, Sophia's Thai Kitchen and Bar is often packed to the brim. Soft lighting and dark wood set the tone of the decor inside, while a high window overlooks a shaded courtyard where outdoor dining is available year-round. All the dishes on the menu reflect the chef's native Thai heritage and flair for spice, and the variety of fresh ingredients go a long way in creating that memorable flavor. Be sure to start off the meal with some of the "Appi-Thai-zers," especially the specialty Tod Mun corn fritters. Other specials include the sour-and-spicy soups, Boss' Favorite Green Curry, and Basil with Peanut Sauce. The restaurant also has a popular bar adjoining it, so drinks are available during dinner.
All stir-fried and pan-fried dishes are cooked in canola oil and MSG is not used in the preparation of menu items. The Pad Thai Noodles are made with chicken, sprouts, prawns, tofu, egg, chives and peanuts. All dishes on the menu retain their traditional Thai names; however, the menu does have English subtitles. At this dining spot, you can request that the temperature (in terms of spiciness) be adjusted according to your taste; for example, from mild to very hot.
The booths in Caffé Italia are enclosed within trellises and wooden walls, which add to the peace and quiet as you dine. There are no fewer than 19 kinds of three-egg omelets, including the famous "Kitchen Sink" omelet, which depends on the chef's mood. The chefs are always innovating when it comes to main Italian courses. The Italian mainstays are well represented as well, from the lighter Pasta Pomodoro to Lasagne Classic.
The Mustard Seed has remained a neighborhood fixture for more than three decades and Chef-owners Paul & Robyn Bergman continue to delight locals and visitors with their eclectic American cuisine. The homely and welcoming atmosphere coupled with friendly service adds to the pleasure of dining. The menu highlights seasonal and fresh ingredients locally-sourced from artisan purveyors; favorites being Portabella Mushroom Bruschetta, Prawns on Saffron Risotto, Gnocchi with Basil Pesto, Herb & Mustard Encrusted Rack of Lamb and Wine Braised Short Rib Ragu. Exquisite wine pairings and decadent desserts bring out the best of each course. Prices are down to earth and private dining is also offered; reserve ahead or just walk in.
