    Steel Magnolias
Alliance Stage - Woodruff Arts CenterOctober 23, 2014 7:30 PM
    1280 Peachtree Street Northeast
    Atlanta, GA 30309
Unbeknownst to many who may have watched (and wept) through the film version of Steel Magnolias, the comedy/drama that managed to touch the heart of America many times over is actually based on the off-Broadway play written by Robert Harling in 1987. The play, similarly to the film, revolves around the symbol of the magnolia tree and the special bond between a group of Southern women who are described as "delicate as magnolias but as tough as steel." The play, despite never reaching the popularity of the film, is still very popular today, with productions continuously given on Broadway, London's West End, as well as at several theater venues throughout the world.

    7 Stages TheatreOctober 23, 2014 8:00 PM
    1105 Euclid Avenue Northeast
    Atlanta, GA 30307
Considered to be one of the greatest theater works written in the English language, the tragedy of Hamlet has been interpreted, staged and adapted countless times in the centuries since its authorship. The protagonist of the title is a conflicted young prince in Denmark, who at the play's start has just seen the death of his father. He is visited by his father's ghost, who reveals to him that it was Hamlet's uncle murdered him. Hamlet swears to avenge his father's death, throwing him into a turmoil that drives the rest of the play's action. As he contemplates death, life, murder and suicide, insanity, jealousy and rage brew between Hamlet, his mother, his love Ophelia, and his uncle. The iconic piece by Shakespeare has been a cornerstone in the Western canon and a cultural reference in myriad capacities over the generations.

    The Phantom Of The Opera
    Fox TheatreOctober 23, 2014 1:00 PM
    660 Peachtree Street Northeast
    Atlanta, GA 30308
On the heels of its acclaimed sold-out run in the United Kingdom, Cameron Mackintosh's spectacular new production of "The Phantom of the Opera" brings its dramatic doomed love triangle to Atlanta. Described by critics as "bigger and better than ever before," the latest edition of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical masterpiece offers bold new staging showcasing original costumes, fresh choreography and exciting special effects (including the legendary chandelier) -- plus a soaring score filled with memorable songs like "Masquerade," "The Music of the Night" and "All I Ask of You." Mackintosh is known for producing sensational musical hits like "Miss Saigon", "Cats", "Mary Poppins" and "Les Misérables" (both the live show and the 2012 Oscar-nominated film), but "Phantom" might just be his best work yet.
