The Butcher Babies is a band from Los Angeles that blends heavy metal with a defined theatrical sensibility to provide the group's music with a tangible quality that its fans happily lap up. The group released its self-titled debut EP in 2012 and it helped establish it as a band that isn't afraid of indulging in some good ol' fashioned vulgarity and visceral gratification in order to achieve its musical and aesthetic ends.

    Drowning Pool
    Concrete Street AmphitheaterOctober 17, 2014 5:00 PM
    623 Power Street
    Corpus Christi, TX 78401
Drowning Pool became a household name on the metal circuit in a matter of months in 2001, thanks to a well-received series of Ozzfest performances and the huge success of "Bodies," the band's debut single. The nu metal band formed in Dallas in 1996, and with constant touring began gathering a local following of heavy music fans. After "Bodies"--and its now oft-repeated chorus of "let the bodies hit the floor"--spread all over alternative rock radio, the band seemed poised to dethrone some of the genre's more prominent heavy-hitters. Unfortunately, however, lead singer Dave Williams died of heart disease just a year later and Drowning Pool was forced to evaluate its options. Ultimately, the band soldiered on, running through a couple of new lead singers before settling into a solidified new lineup. The group released its eponymous fourth album in 2010 and continues to tour regularly.

    Texas Jazz Festival
    Heritage ParkOctober 17, 2014
    1581 North Chaparral Avenue
    Corpus Christi, TX 78401
Talk about humble beginnings: in 1959, a local jazz club organized an impromptu performance for 150 people, just for the fun of it. Small as that may sound, this crowd was beyond what they expected, and they tried it again the next year. Thus began the Texas Jazz Festival, which today attracts tens of thousands of people and dozens of famous and local jazz bands for a three-day-long extravaganza. Although it has moved to avoid blocking downtown traffic, the festival is still free, giving jazz lovers everywhere the chance to hear their favorite sounds without paying a dime. Dates and times vary; check event website for schedule updates.
