    »Cafe Bourbon Street

Not far from the glossy sports bars and student hangouts of the university area, Cafe Bourbon Street sits as a dirty little beacon of all that is divey. The walls are covered with grubby old junk. The bathrooms are dirty. Punk bands come from near and far to play before the sauced and grungy crowds here. Long-time local favorites The Feelers even chose Bourbon Street as the site of their swansong performance in August 2008. Drinks-wise, you can't go wrong. Where else can you order a 40-ounce bottle of cheap malt liquor and drink it right there at the bar? See website for schedule of events.

    »Ugly Tuna Saloona

Right across from a university in central Ohio, one would not expect to find a seafood shack straight outta Ft. Lauderdale, Flordia. Nevertheless, Ugly Tuna Saloona persists. Located right across from the Ohio State University, the place is a double shot of Floridian fun right down your gullet. The menu consists of fish done a ton of ways, from raw shellfish and steamed pots, to grilled mahi and fried crab cakes. The house's namesake swimmer -- tuna -- can be served sandwich-style, taco-style, seared with ginger, or grilled and jerked. A number of non-seafood options are available to appease the squeamish (or allergic), ranging from burgers and sandwiches to steaks and salads. In terms of atmosphere, the Tuna is a party all the time.

    »Surly Girl Saloon

Generally, truth in advertising is something to be valued. At Surly Girl, there are conspicuously few surly girls -- or surly anybodies for that matter. Most of the faces at Surly Girl are quite pleasant, for this is a respected neighborhood watering hole and eatery. The food consists of pizzas and sandwiches, and for dessert there's a whole list of specialty cupcakes (also known as "cuppycakes") to choose from. Behind the bar, there's every kind of liquor imaginable, and the gracious staff will turn any of it into a bright shiny cocktail for you, if you so desire. The beer menu is something to behold as well, full as it is of impressive micros from the region and as far away as Petaluma, CA. On select nights, Surly Girl hosts special events such as Punk Rock Aerobics which, as the name suggests, means a bunch of punk girls (and a few boys) in spandex doing jumping jacks to Devo and the Misfits.

    »Las Cazuelas Grill

Just north of the Ohio State University, there's a strip of ethnic eateries where students or budget-savvy travelers can dine pretty finely on the cheap. Cazuelas is the southernmost, which is fitting because it specializes in grilled lunches and dinners from just a ways south of the border. Burritos, enchiladas, fajitas, tortas, fish entrees, meat entrees, tacos and tamales are the draw, and there're mucho margaritas to wash it all down. See website for menu and more.
