On February 28, 2015, Desmon Louis Smith (DLS) Education and STEM Services and Urban Trendsetters News Magazine and Media (UTS) will host the Education to Innovation STEM Conference and Expo. The two companies have combined their experience in education and outreach in order to bring awareness and take on President Obamas initiative for the United States to move from the middle to the top of the pack in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).   This event was created to bring more awareness of STEM initiatives and programming to students, teachers and parents. Emphasis are placed on the importance of teaching STEM in our educational system as well as promoting STEM opportunities and careers to women and minorities. Attendees are encouraged to pursue degrees and careers in the most sought after STEM positions for the future.   Our mission is to develop young men and women with active creative minds to explore the world of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. We seek to help by providing educational tools that will inspire them to succeed, said LaVonia Smith, DLS Education and STEM Services Founder.   The Education to Innovation conference includes breakfast, Conference/EXPO, an on-site and virtual career fair. Kick-off begins February 28, 2015 @ 9:00 AM 3:00 PM at Hilton Inn (East), 3900 Chargrin Drive, Columbus, OH 43219.   Highlights of the event includes a workshop from STEM Certified Trainer of STEM.org, Susan Rodriguez, How to Create and Design a STEM Curriculum. Rodriquez is a National Board Certified Teacher and Adjunct Professor for National University, San Diego, CA. Her lesson plans aides in the recruitment of teachers/educators needed in the areas of STEM Education. She also encourages diverse groups to pursue STEM careers particularly, women and minorities. Teachers Continuing Education Units (CEU) are available based on local school districts policy. STEM Education partners, Veteran-Woman Small Business Owner, LaVonia Smith, PhD of DLS Education & STEM Services and Sharon Gordon, CEO of Urban Trendsetter News Magazines community goal for Central Ohio is to develop relationships between corporations, colleges, universities and educators. This will help to provide more positions of internships for students in the areas of STEM Education.   Since the launch of Urban Trendsetters we have always maintained an active role providing available scholarship information and the latest news in education to our readers in our Education Trends section of the publication. Partnering with DLS Education Services and Dr. Smith will enable us to bring more awareness to STEM and really address the lack of diversity in these industries head-on with one-on-one dialog between educators, recruiters and the community, said Gordon. The Buckeyes are the sports teams that compete on behalf of the school in NCAA Division I athletic games. Though the athletic department hosts a wide variety of teams, it is probably best known for its well performing basketball, baseball and football teams.

Join teen girls, mothers and mentors from throughout central Ohio to celebrate individuality, self-respect and healthy relationships at the Hyatt Regency Columbus. Due to space constraints, please do not bring younger siblings or other family members. The event is free of charge, but each attendee (both girls and mothers/mentors) must pre-register separately and present a ticket to enter. Parking is available at the Hyatt Regency for $4.     For the first time, the Purple Teen Party will include special workshops for teen attendees and their mother/mentors following the keynote speaker and fashion show. All teens may choose one of six different workshops. Mothers and mentors will all attend a separate workshop titled 'A Mother's Perspective: When Teen Dating Violence Strikes Your Home', where a mother shares her journey as she continues to deal with Teen Dating Violence and the affects it has had on her family. Mothers and mentors will remain in the ballroom. Teens must choose only ONE workshop when they register for the event. The workshops offered are: 1. Paint to Empower With Anna Sokol, Art Educator & owner of Art with Anna. In this workshop you will create a personal masterpiece using watercolors and powerful words and phrases that inspire. Each participant will take home their piece as a reminder of their personal worth. 2. R-E-S-P-E-C-T: Find out what it means to you. With Felice R. Kassoy, Ph.D. School Counselor and Kathryn Monda, B.A. Psychology. Hands-on activities and great discussions with peers to learn how to become a more confident and assertive person. 3. Vinyasa Yoga: Embrace your Inner Strength Through Breath and Movement With Jessica Ketner, M.S., IMFT, 500 RYT. Yoga encompasses much more than just physical postures. It is a philosophy that strives to connect ones mind, body and spirit. Yoga puts us up against our challenges and struggles and teaches us to compassionately shed the layers and the armor that cover up the deepest pieces of who we are. 4. Be You, Be Beautiful: You are Important, Significant and Indispensable! With Deja and Chanelle Redman, Replenish The Spa Co-Op. Join Replenish the Spa co-op, and enjoy being YOU.
