Hollie Cook is a London-based singer who combines sunny pop with reggae, dub and tropicalia influences. The daughter of Sex Pistols drummer Paul Cook, it seemed inevitable that she'd eventually find her way to music. Unlike the hard-edged punk rock of her father, however, Cook has gravitated toward a breezily mellow style that channels the feel-good vibes of the Caribbean. Her deeply ingrained love for reggae and dub is palpable in her music, which helps balance out the more pop-oriented nature of the songwriting to a satisfying degree.

Ian Hicks and Patricia Hall, the two members of Soft Metals, formed in 2009 after bonding over a mutual adoration of 1970s and 1980s synthpop. The Portland-based duo quickly began writing original material that drew on a wide array of rock and electronic sub-genres, including krautrock, house, shoegaze and techno. The result is a slick and at times icy version of retro-minded dance pop that has earned Soft Metals impressive praise and accolades within Portland's celebrated music scene and beyond.

    Poliça
    Doug Fir LoungeOctober 22, 2014 9:00 PM
    830 East Burnside
    Portland, OR 97214
Poliça is the musical project led by former Roma di Luna singer Channy Casselle, who joined Vampire Hands bassist Chris Bierden and drummers Ben Ivascu and Drew Christopherson in 2011. With Ryan Olson as producer, Poliça creates a sound reminiscent of Gayngs, another one of Olson's musical endeavors, complete with hypnotic auto-tuned vocals and melodic bass lines. The group isn't just a spinoff of the Gayngs, essentially a super-group of musicians who split the vocal performances equally. Casselle is the natural anchor of Poliça. Her distinctive voice is almost too endearing to be auto-tuned, but she uses it more as an instrument, playing and matching guitar rhythms and drum beats. Poliça played its fourth show as a band in front of a sold out crowd at the Bowery Ballroom in New York, quickly generating a fan base and a fair amount of attention for its 2012 debut album, Give You the Ghost.

By using a wide variety of samples in his songs as well as an eclectic blend of low end tones, British electronic music composer Simon Green (aka Bonobo) has managed to establish himself as one of the more prominent names in the downtempo music scene. After spending a good deal of time on the road throughout the 2000s, supporting his critically acclaimed albums Dial M for Monkey and Days to Come, Green started performing his music with the a full band rather than solo with the aid of a laptop and electronic switchboard. This ability to play electronic compositions with live instrumentals helped further Green's reputation and propel his standing as one of the more noteworthy names in the electronic scene.
