The cosmos must have been aligned above Portland, Oregon at the start of the millennium because the sonic star child that was birthed from this time and place is unlike most of the other drivel-inducing bands out there. The band's name is Blitzen Trapper and it plays a uniquely soothing form of folk rock that's unintimidating and well-suited to be heard in nearly every social environment. The band's acoustic guitars and harmonica bellows blend well with lead singer Eric Earley's raspy croon and the result is an extremely enticing sound that begs for repeated listens.

Billy Joe Shaver is an iconic country singer/songwriter from Corsicana, TX who stumbled into music while working at a lumber mill. After an accident which cost him two fingers, Shaver decided that life was too short to work a job he didn't enjoy and taught himself how to play guitar without his missing fingers. While trying to hitchhike to Los Angeles, he ended up in Nashville where he got a job as a songwriter and caught the attention of Waylon Jennings. Shaver wrote most of the songs on Jennings' 1973 Honky tonk Heroes album, and went on to write songs for Elvis Presley and Kris Kristofferson before securing his own record deal. He released 20 albums in just over 30 years, starting with his 1973 debut Old Fiver and Dimers Like Me, and including his 2007 effort, Everybody's Brother. Shaver has since become a prolific songwriter in the country music scene and was inducted into the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame in 2011.
