Yia Yia's, pronounced Ya Ya's, means "grandma", so you know that their chocolates are going to be yummy. The business, which Clifford Schultz originally opened in 1987 on Central Avenue in Lancaster, is noted for their homemade, hand-dipped chocolates and their sponge candy, a western New York specialty. The sponge candy also comes in a number of flavors, including milk chocolate, dark chocolate, orange, and peanut butter. Other candies sold include clusters, peanut brittle, chocolate miniatures, and ribbon candy. Established in 1961, Johnson Estate winery is the oldest exclusively estate winery in New York State, which means that the entire wine-making process is done at the winery, from growing the grapes to bottling. The land was originally purchased by Frederick Johnson in 1908. Today, his grandchildren operate the winery, spanning 200 acres of land. About 14,000 cases of wine are produced each year here. Some of the grapes they grow include Concord, Delaware, Niagara, cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay. Their signature wine is Liebestropfchen, which translates to “little love drops". As the largest and oldest independent bookstore in western New York, Talking Leaves has catered to Buffalo and its academic community since 1971. They provide a large selection of local interest books and best-sellers, along with books concerning Native American interest, textbooks for the University students, and the most extensive selection of poetry in the United States. They house a helpful staff sure to make you feel at home, and the store also regularly schedules events with book authors.
Established in 1957, Central Park Plaza was once a thriving market with two major supermarkets and a big department and hardware store, making it one of the largest shopping districts of North Buffalo. However, the area fell into disarray in the 1980s. After being restored in 2002, it has become a community plaza. As of 2014, the area has received a promised reinvestment and will be turned into a mixed-use development that includes housing, business and other community centers.
