Inaugurated in 2002, the Juscelino Kubitschek Bridge was named after the Brazilian president who was responsible for the construction of the new capital. The bridge connects the South Lake, Paranoá Lake and São Sebastião to the central part of the city through the Monumental Axis, over Paranoá Lake. The bridge is 1200 meters long (3/4 mile), 24 meters (26 yards) wide and has six lanes, three flowing north and three south. There are also side lanes for bicycles and pedestrians. This bridge is a recognizable city landmark despite only being opened in the beginning of the 21st century.
