»Sabine National Forest

The Sabine National Forest located in East Texas was established in 1936. Inhabited by tribes in the 16th Century, the forest has an interesting historical background. The early Spanish immigrants called them Tejas, now known as Caddo. Over centuries, European immigrants tried to convert these tribes but were evidently unsuccessful. By the 19th Century, the tribes were relocated and the land was under serious depletion process. After crucial attempts were made by the Texas Legislature to protect and conserve the land, Texas and USDA Forest together worked towards making this forest not just about rich history but also about recreation, with activities like fishing, camping, water sports, hunting, boating and picnicking on offer.
