    »Mid-south Fair

    September 19, 2014

Held every year on the Mid South Fairgrounds, the Mid South Fair is where entertainment resides. Although the event honors agricultural and homemaking skills, with pig and pie crust contests galore, it is also about pure fun. Prizes are awarded in such diverse categories as livestock, quilts, jellies and art. After a day of tough competition, you can hit the midway, ride the rides and eat just about anything on a stick: corn, pork chops, chillies. Other dining options abound including the fair classic: the funnel cake. The PRCA Rodeo takes place each night and numerous national acts will take the main stage for free concerts.

    »How To Dress Well

    September 24, 2014

Dreamy and full of delicate falsettos, the music of Tom Krell - who performs under the How to Dress Well moniker - is the lo-fi underground version of R&B slow jams. Based out of Cologne, Germany, when Krell debuted his How to Dress Well project he was a translator of modern philosophy by day, but a musician and DJ by night. By looping slowed down samples of pop musicians like Michael Jackson and Mariah Carey and overlaying them with his own haunting vocals, Krell might not produce the type of music that will fill a dance floor, but How to Dress Well has been receiving positive attention nonetheless, finding a niche amongst fans of the quieter side of bedroom pop.

    »Rick Springfield

    September 27, 2014 8:00 PM

Best known for his 1981 hit "Jessie's Girl," Australian-born singer/songwriter Rick Springfield got his start as a solo artist in the early 1970s when he relocated to the United States. He released his debut album Beginnings, for which he provided all the lyrics, songwriting, lead vocals, guitar, keyboard and bandjo, in 1972 to immediate acclaim. His acting career is perhaps best defined by his soap star status on General Hospital, a stint that lasted from 1981 to 1983 and kicked off the most notable decade of his career. His 1981 album, Working Class Dog, featured the Grammy Award-winning song "Jessie's Girl," which became an instant classic, catapulting Springfield onto the world stage. After a series of another six successful studio albums released throughout the 1980s, he took a hiatus from recording, focused on a side project and finally returned to his solo career in 1999 with Karma. Though he never regained the level of celebrity he earned in previous years, Springfield returned as a recurring guest star on General Hospital in 2005 and continues to release new material as a solo recording artist, ultimately reviving bit of the fame around his name.

    »King Tuff

    September 30, 2014

Hailing from Brattleboro, Vermont King Tuff is a psychedelic garage rock band centered around front man Kyle Thomas, who adopted the alter ego King Tuff while he was a teenager playing in folk bands. Though he is probably best known for his work on J. Mascis' side project Witch, Thomas formed a band in 2008, began mixing 1960s garage rock with 1970s glam rock and eventually ended up with King Tuff's debut album, Was Dead. After touring with Hunx & his Punx and Witch and releasing an album with his power pop band Happy Birthday, Thomas returned his focus to King Tuff and released the band's eponymous follow-up album in 2012 with retro-pop elements.
