Austin, Texas-based singer Robert Kraft has a voice adept at translating well into a variety of genres, making him an ideal vocalist for any composer. Accordingly, respected Texas composer and musician JD Pendley decided to join with him and provide the arrangements and guitar for his voice, whether they be old classics or new material. With the addition of cellist Lindsay Greene, the Robert Kraft Trio was complete and the band began performing on the city's live music circuit. With residencies at several popular night spots, the trio has become a favorite amongst the easy listening lounge crowd.

    »Mike Flanigin

    August 29, 2014 10:30 PM

Mike Flanigin is a pianist who grew up on the outskirts of Dallas, in a town called Denton, Texas. Developing a strong affinity for music, Flanigin soon made the move, as most Texas-based musicians do, to Austin, where a thriving night-life scene welcomes any talented musician with open arms. Though Flanigin had only played the piano once before moving to Austin, one night at a music club, he slipped behind the decks of a Hammond B3 organ and was instantly smitten. The instrument connected with Flanigin in some intrinsic way and after three months of practicing with the B3, he was invited to play with a band led by one of the bigger names of the Austin music scene, Doyle Brahmall Sr. It was during this time, Flanigin really started to grow as a jazz musician and after seeing him perform, Steve Wertheimer, a club owner, offered Flanigin the opportunity to serve as band leader for The Continental Gallery, which he was opening up in 2007. Flanigin has since managed to grow by leaps and bounds as an instrumentalist by playing an ardent amount of live shows and is now viewed as a premier Texas session musician who can play nearly any genre with ease.

    August 29, 2014 8:00 PM

When the laid-back, Philadelphia hip-hop/blues band G. Love & Special Sauce entered its second decade, the group's eponymous front-man embarked on a singer-songwriter oriented solo project. Shedding much of his main gig's hip-hop vibe in favor of an easygoing pop sensibility, G. Love released a string of well-received albums that bear much of the thumbprint of some of his high profile adult alternative collaborators like Jack Johnson and the Avett Brothers.

Mother Falcon is an indie pop-minded classical music collective based out of Austin, Texas. Using multiple cellos and violins, acoustic bass, mandolin, horns, guitar and percussion, the group creates pop song-structured compositions that really utilize the space and characteristics of every instrument being played. This isn't a half-baked band looking to gain credibility by using a classical instrument now and then. Rather, Mother Falcon is made-up entirely of well-trained musicians capable of tastefully adding to the band's songs with a sense of professional grace and restraint. Modern indie music is also a heavy influence on Mother Falcon, well evidenced in the group's use of vocals and grandiose arrangements. Fans of like-minded contemporaries such as Owen Pallet and Beirut will appreciate the band's modern twist on classical music.
