This unique indoor stadium, with a seating capacity of 80,325, is host to music concerts, sporting events, religious gatherings and more. Its claim to fame includes being the first indoor stadium to host a soccer game on fresh grass, during the 1993 U.S. Cup. Events are also held in it's large parking area like wrestling, motorcycle racing, college and high school football games and consumer shows. Silverdome is definitely beyond comparison.
On the campus of Oakland University, Meadow Brook Theatre is somewhat remote from much of the Detroit area, but it's worth the drive. Since 1967, it has been the professional theater in residence at the university and has won many awards for excellence. Both local and imported talent from New York and Chicago contribute to the sets and productions. The venue itself is a rather sterile auditorium, but the sight lines and acoustics are more than adequate. You will need to drive if you want to eat or drink after the show, as no nightspots are available on campus.
Part of Oakland University's Recreation and Athletics Center Complex, the Athletics Center O'Rena is home to Oakland basketball and volleyball teams. The arena which hosted its first game 1998 now has a state-of-the-art video board which makes it one of the most famous locations to watch collegiate basketball. Apart from the home team the arena has hosted some of the top teams of the nation.
Varner Hall is located on the Oakland University campus. This venue houses a recital hall, studio theatre and several rehearsal rooms with a collective capacity for over 500 people. Campus Recreation is a cutting-edge facility of the Oakland University that promotes a healthy way of life. Meadow Brook is the historic home built by one of the automotive aristocracy's most remarkable women, Matilda Dodge Wilson. Constructed between 1926 and 1929, Meadow Brook represents one of the finest examples of Tudor-revival architecture in America. The home has 39 chimneys and is elaborately crafted with hand-carved wood, ceramic art tile, moulded ceilings and ornate fixtures. In the Hall is an extensive collection of lavish paintings, sculptures, furniture and other art objects. Meadow Brook Hall is a cultural center, offering guided tours and special exhibitions, as well as serving as a unique setting for weddings, corporate gatherings, and parties.
