    If you are up to the challenge of a hike through four life zones, that climbs from 7,080 feet to 10,280 in just under eight miles, La Luz Trail offers you an alpine escape from the concrete jungle. On weekends, the trail is crowded with day hikers, joggers and their pets. The trail switchbacks upward among granite spires, ponderosa pines, and quaking aspens. Near the top, the trail forks. The right fork takes you to Sandia Crest; the left fork terminates at the Sandia Peak Tramway. Take along plenty of water.

    »Putt-Putt Golf & Games

    Play one of three whimsical 18-hole golf courses, in increasing degrees of difficulty or spend a whole afternoon playing all three. This fun facility offers special rates for birthday, school, office and group parties. The ice cream parlor and snack bar are well stocked with plenty of snacks, candy and beverages and an arcade with the latest electronic games will keep you entertained in inclement weather.

    »Arroyo Del Oso Golf Course

    President Clinton played this course in 1998. This is one of Golf Digests Top 50, 27-hole courses. You can play weekdays on a first-come-first-serve basis, or call for current tee status and fees. Weekend reservations are available for 18-hole play starting Wednesday mornings at 7a. This beautiful course features panoramic views of the Sandia Mountains. The full-service pro-shop is a Sports Illustrated, award winner. There is a restaurant where banquets, meeting facilities and catering can be arranged.

    »Montgomery Pool

    Montgomery is one of several public pools managed by the City of Albuquerque and available for use by the general public at subsidized, affordable prices. An outdoor facility, it is open during school summer vacations only. The pool is long enough for laps, but unfortunately for those seeking serious exercise above and beyond a cooling dip, Montgomery does not operate the dedicated lap swim hours that most of the other city facilities do. The wading pool will keep those with small kids happy, in addition to the fact that on Sundays admission is free of charge for children under 18 years of age. - Pip Lustgarten

    »Balloon Fiesta Park

    Spread over a massive area of 360 acres, the Balloon Fiesta Park is an ideal place for a lazy Sunday afternoon, or a morning walk, any day that you find yourself free. Besides being sued as a venue for ballooning throughout the year, the park also packs enough facilities to make it a very entertaining place: the Norther Launch Field, where you can treat your eyes to the phenomenon of air balloons, the Albuquerque Golf Training Facility, for the golf enthusiasts, the Albuquerque International Balloon Museum, and the park is home to the Eastdale Little League, and has 8 baseball fields.     Funded by the city of Albuquerque, the Columbus tennis facility has four courts, two of which are lit to enable evening play. They are available to the public free of charge, are without staff, do not take reservations, and have a Laykold playing surface and metal nets. The North Valley is a beautiful neighborhood, semi-rural in places: if you're feeling really fit, ride a bike to the courts so you can explore the acequia (ditch) trails that crisscross the entire North Valley, and that additionally connect to the trail running the length of the Rio Grande's trajectory through town. - Pip Lustgarten

    »Jerry Cline Tennis Complex

    The Jerry Cline Tennis Complex provides two useful options for those who do not have a tennis partner. You can come alone and rent a ball machine, priced per hour. Or you can attend one of the many drop-in doubles sessions. Lessons are also an option—though not offered year-round—and are priced extraordinarily cheaply, as is court rental. The only drawback of the Jerry Cline Complex is its proximity to the interstate: traffic roars past continually, so those in search of a quieter place to play should take a look at the city's website for details about the 33 additional courts around town. - Pip Lustgarten

    »Valley Pool

    Valley is one of several pools managed by the City of Albuquerque. Attached to public high schools, their access hours are shared between students and the general public. Valley is rarely busy, so you will usually get a lane to yourself. A "Water Exercise" class, in which an instructor leads the group, is offered for a low cost on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. There are also periodic swimming lessons, aquatic team meetings, scuba lessons and socials.     »UNM North Golf Course

    Check-out this golf course that wraps around the UNM Law School and faces many well known research and medical centers. Since 1942, golfers have enjoyed this first-class, 9-hole course. One of the major attractions of this course is its central location. A snack bar is available and the pro shop staff is helpful and friendly.

    This City of Albuquerque-managed pool is 25 meters long and also features an outdoor wading pool. Admission prices are very competitive, especially on Friday evenings, which are 25-cent night. A "Water Exercise" class, in which an instructor leads the group, is offered for a low cost Monday through Friday. "Low Impact", a water exercise class for seniors, is offered Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
